Child support question

Hi everyone,

Child support: My parents are separated: my dad lives in China and my mom lives in the U.S. with me. My dad makes much more money than does my mom, so he sends every month a certain amount of money for child support. My mom gets the check and spends it for my needs.

I see 4 places in the FAFSA to report this:

46b) Student's child support paid
47c) Student's child support received
94b) Parent's child support paid
95c) Parent's child support received

Where should I report the child support? Thanks.

95C - It is your custodial parent who is receiving child support

If you are over 23 I think, you dont’ need to even report it.

My parents are divorced and I put down the supporting parent as whomever made less money that year… Help get more $$

I’m 19 years old.

JenSully - That is not the correct way to file FAFSA - unfortunately you don’t get to make up the rules as you go along! FAFSA has very specific requirements about which parent must provide information. If you don’t follow them you risk losing your aid as you’re certifying that you’ve provided the correct data.

Q. If my parents are divorced, whose information do I need?
A. Report the information of the parent with whom you lived the most during the 12 months preceding the date you completed the FAFSA. It does not make a difference which parent claims you as a dependent for tax purposes. If you did not live with either parent or lived equally with each parent, the parental information must be provided for the parent from whom you received the most financial support during the preceding 12 months or the parent from whom you received the most support the last time support was given.
