Yea, I hope that was a joke =)
I think that was just an ignorant chinese general or an interview blown out of proportion. Obviously 1 mere general doesn't represent the voice of china.

This thread has gone off subject. As far as nuclear weapons go, China would not use them in the event of a war against the US. This would simply start a global nuclear war, thus destroying the entire world as we know it. Those who are not killed immediately will die shortly of the tremendous radiation. In essence, the human race will be wiped out, along with all other life on earth, and thus marking the next great extinction.

Just answering someone's question above, all nuclear fission devices result in fallout. I suppose if one was built on the properties of matter-antimatter or only fusion (not just initiating the reaction, as is in an H-Bomb) then that would cause no nuclear fallout (although energy by definition is a type of radiation).

Why doesn't China have a right to take back Taiwain in case it declares independence? The Union had a right to take back the Confederacy when they seceded from the Union. I see no reason why China doesn't have a right to take back Taiwan if it does declare independence.

Well, if you actually go read history, it mentions that KMT retreated to Taiwan and set up its government there. KMT, being Republic of China, are still in Taiwan today. PROC took over the control of China, but did nothing about KMT, ROC, or Taiwan for that matter. Since ROC was never a part of PROC, and probably will never be, I see no reason for PROC to "take back" Taiwan, when Taiwan was never theirs. For another, I doubt Taiwan will be stupid enough to declare independence in the first place, atleast for now.

The Union had the right (I would suppose since I'm not very sure about the details there) because the Confederacy was part of it, but in this case, Taiwan or ROC was never part of China(PROC).

serephia: I don't want to get dragged into this debate (since I've already been through a China/Taiwan debate before), but Taiwan has been under China's control since some dynasty (I think it was qing dynasty). That was when Sun led the revolution against the emperor in the early 1900s and China became "ROC." Thus, Taiwan became part of ROC.

On a side note: I hope I have my dynasties right, it would be pretty embarrassing if I didn't (since I'm Chinese).

Back to the topic: ROC retreating to Taiwan and setting up their government there would be like another American Civil War where the losing side retreated and set up its own government on Hawaii.

Its a matter of perspective. For us it would be beneficial for Taiwan to remain that way. For China however, it is in their interest to get Taiwan back.
