just wondering if there's anyone out there who has taken chinese 1a and can speak from experience how the workload is. i'm an engineering major, so i would also be taking other engineering classes. just wondering how the course load work is..ie. how many hours on average a week/how difficult the class format is/how it is run. prof next semester is yang. thanks for the help

I've only taken the Chinese series for Mandarin speakers and dialect speakers, and don't know anyone who's taken the regular 5 unit Chinese. I'm assuming you have no background in Chinese since you're taking 1A. For me, the X and Y series were already enough work even though I've had experience in Chinese before. For any 5 unit language course, not just Chinese, where you're learning a new language, you're gonna have to put in significant time and effort. It definately will be tough with your engineering courses, and you might neglect the language course at times because your other courses are in the end more important. It will be hard to keep up because it's every day.. But it's definately doable if you have a genuine interest and passion for learning the language.
