Chinese 1A

Does anyone know the deal with enrolling for Chinese 1A or any Chinese class? Are you not allowed to use priority on them? I heard they may be hard to get into if you're not majoring/minoring in Chinese. Anyone know if this is true? Thanks.

they're not hard to get into...there were just budget cuts, so they can't offer as many classes as they want to. anyway, go for it second pass, unless you happen to be considering Chinese as a major or something.

to sign up, you enroll first and then in the beginning of the school year you take the placement test. if you pass, you stay (or get placed into 2A or 3A if you're proficient enough), if you don't, you can drop or move to Chinese 1.

So will we get in for sure if we use second pass??

Also, if I can speak Chinese fluently during the placement test but do poorly on the written/reading (I barely know how to read or write, except for BASIC characters), will that put me in 1A?

you won't get in for sure, but it's not worth using a first pass on unless its related to your major or minor, or you're only taking three classes and the third one is a large GE.

if you can't read or write, you go into 1A.

if i know that I'm in 1A do i still have to take the placement test?

UCLA - Asian Languages & Cultures

Has anybody taken Chinese 1A with Sun before? Is she easy? I was hoping to take 1A to supplement other harder classes, so I'm looking for an easier class..

So if I can't speak fluently, but I have a good understanding of pinyin, and can't read or write. Do I belong in 1 or 1A?

Is the teacher for 1A hard?

you can answer that for yourself, since you didn't mention anything about understanding it. as for speaking, you don't need to be fluent.

dunno about this quarter's teacher, but 1/1A in general isn't difficult.

and since i just noticed this, when you enroll for 1 or 1A you enroll into a waitlist. if you pass the test, you're automatically put into the class. if all the waitlists fill up before you sign up, just take the test anyway. if you pass you'll be enrolled or put on a waitlist or something like that...they might give you PTE number, not sure.
