Hey- does anyone have any information regarding the Chinese program at Dartmouth? I'm interested in majoring in biochemistry, but I also want to continue studying Chinese in college. If anyone knows anyone currently studying Chinese at Dartmouth, it would be great if I could get a student's perspective. Thanks!

Well, my roommate's actually taking Chinese II right now...he started Chinese I out of the blue his freshman fall. He has an amazing gift for languages (his professor referred to him as "one of the best beginning students I've ever seen") and got an A in the course, but studied about 2-3 hours every day in just that course. He seemed a little disappointed with his second term prof, but I'd have to check with him on exactly why. If you want, I can ask him to write a little about his experiences.

Thanks for the reply. It would be great if you could get him to write a bit about his experience. I won't be beginning Chinese- but continuing to study the language- so if he has any insight on the higher-level courses as well, that would be great. Thanks so much.

here is a chinese studies at dartmouth story
when my son(08) was a high school sophomore we went to an info meeting in orlando given by the regional rep..he was maybe 2 years out of dartmouth and he told his dartmouth story of how he chose his major..
one quarter early at dart he needed one more class to sign up for..he had no chinese background, never took chinese in high school but as a whim he took intro to chinese..well he fell in love with it and then traveled to china for his studies abroad term..he said he loved the
chinese profs at dart and then majored in chinese!!..his passionate love for dartmouth was one of the primary reasons my son thought about applying ..i reflect on this story as my son is preparing to leave for france for his study abroad term in 2 weeks..
ps the last i heard of that regional rep is that he is in law school in
california

Sorry- just found this post.

Chinese at Dartmouth is very good. Not only is Chinese a really useful language to learn nowadays, but with "drill sessions" (four times a week you meet to get "drilled" in languages by your TA, a technique perfected by renowned Dartmouth Professor Rassias) you get really good really quick.

As for cultural courses, it's hit or miss. All of the professors in the department are very knowledgeable about their subjects and passionate- some are just better lecturers than others.
