I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not First Year Chinese for Dialect Speakers require you to know how to read/write Chinese - because that would decide which class I should be in. </p>

<p>nope, just have some grasp of what the language (or its variants) should sound like.</p>
<p>but a caveat: there are people in there who are absolutely FLUENT in mandarin. i’m a native mandarin speaker and went to observe my friend’s class (the one for non-mandarin chinese speakers) for fun, and heard people in there that spoke better than i did.</p>
