Chinese language

Anyone who is currently attending UF. Should I persue that course? I spent a summer in Beijing and learned the basics and I would like to continue studying it. In high school, however, french class knocked down my weighed GPA tremendously (non-honors course, B average for 3 years).

I'd like to take it and learn the language (mandarin), but I don't want it to kill my GPA. Any opinions?

You are allowed to take foreign language classes pass/fail - but you only have a few weeks at the beginning of the semester to apply to take it that way (it's called the s/u option). If you miss the deadline, you're out of luck. I'd encourage you to take Chinese if you have a genuine interest in it - it's definitely not easy, but go for it!

what do you mean pass fail? like if you pass, you get a 4.0? you fail, you fail?

Pass/fail doesn't factor into your GPA. If you pass, you get the credit hours. If you fail, you don't.

You're only allowed to take one class like that per semester, and you can't take any courses required for your major/minor/gen ed pass/fail.

AWESOME!!! so i can take chinese and if i get over a 59 i get credit (or whatever % pass is at UF) and not affect my GPA?! amazing!

Yes, the language courses at UF are really tough. You meet every day and have homework every day. If you miss more than 3 lectures or so, they drop you from the course. So taking it on S/U is probably a good idea if you are worried about your gpa. (It may be more than 60%, in fact, it's possible that it may be a C or 70% in order to get the S)

I know people who gamble on these courses because they're 5 credits and so if you do well, that is a great factor to your gpa. (5*4=20 gpa points!)
