If you were looking for an intellectual debate, join Mensa or something. And by the way, I never questioned you motives during our argument: I assumed you were there solely to bully me around. See my prior post about the danger of assumptions...

Bullying? That's what this is about?

How on earth did you come to that conclusion? Seriously. I didn't think anything I said was that harsh...

yeah, like you could stick a piece of coal in their ass and have a diamond in 5 seconds

Thanks, Ferris. :p

[Pets UCLAri.] :] Don't worry about that. ^^; Some people are even more harsh than you are. For example, Me! Muwhahaha! :P

stereotypes are usually true, or they never would have become stereotypes in the first place...

Yeah, logical fallocies are usually true.

Stereotypes are always somewhat grounded in reality. It hurts to admit, but it's true.

Yeah, it's somewhat true. Asians score higher.

But it's NOT true that they score higher b/c their brain is superior or wired in some different way. It's b/c of their culture (focus, maybe too much, on education). If all white/black/hispanic people lived under Asian parents who pushed their kids as hard in education, they'd score higher too.

^ True.

:)

this thread has become a way for nonasians to vent about how asians always score higher than them on standardized tests
many posters (one of them being ryan2288) are accusing others of being racist, WHILE posting racist comments of their own!

"it's easy to get good grades if all you do is study!"
That phrase is horribly offensive, and you should feel ashamed for posting such an asinine comment

Think about what this thread was posted for...its sole purpose was for people to justify to themselves why Asians score higher on tests!
It has never occurred to anyone here that the reasons may not be due to pushy parents or constant studying.
Asian people might just be smart! What is wrong with that!

The problem is that American media shelters non-asians from the truth. You never see a report on an Asian child-prodigy on the news, now do you? The technologies that shape our everyday lives are usually originating from China, Japan, Taiwan, or Korea, yet you don't hear of the genius Asian developers of the technology, just the American company that bought the software.

I could go on and on about this, but I will let someone reply to my post before doing so. I bet the reply will be an obnoxious comment about how my post was "racist" (by the way, look up racist before you reply please!) or the reply will be a racist comment in and of itself.

The racism, stereotyping, and labeling of Asians exhibited in this thread demonstrates the lack of common sense that some of you possess.

Okay, first of all, not just ANY Asian parent can come to the US from their respective country. The competition is fierce and cuthroat in Asia to get into some of the elite schools around the world, so Asian parents that came to this country worked very hard, were overachievers, etc. and thus they lined themselves up with great jobs or got admittance to top-notch universities. Now, having incredibly academically motivated parents will put tremendous pressure on the kids and they are hence literally obliged to study and work hard themselves, which is why a geral majority of the Asians in the US tend to be brighter than the rest os the population, it is because their parents were the best of the best in their own countries back home. So why are Asian kids here inclined to excel in school??? Maybe its because their parents literally worked their asses(all-nighters) to get them where they are now, and now they beleive its their turn.

Also, the average American is SO MUCH more educated and intelligent than the average Indian living in India for example. There are as many Indian kids, if not many more, who smoke, screw around with women, steal, etc. in India as there teenagers here in the US. Every area has its good apples and its bad apples. In my opinion, the US has far more educated citizens comparatively to any other nation in the world.

So please, I request all of you, to not make any more harsh and illogical generalizations of a bigger picture that many of you have you apparently have yet to comprehend.

I think I figured out why I do so well in school . BTW I'm chinese

WHen I was a little kid, my parents didn't let me have a social life. Couldn't hang out with friends, go to parties, whatever. I had two things to do with my time: schoolwork and watch T.V and play video games. You can't watch T.V. all the time and video games get boring so I focused on school (with T.V. a close second place). I saw I was doing well iin school and peopel liked me cuz I was "smart". So I worked at school- improving my skills for 11 years.
I guess a big reason I worked so much at school was I had an inferiority/superiority complex. I've always felt distant from everyone and the thought that I was better than everyone ( I think for a long, long time I was in my classes) at sometihng, made me feel good. That combined with a little postive reinforcement from teachers and students, and out comes a academic machine who can and will do anytihng school related

I was also a whiny, insecure ***** who cried a lot. And academics and grades made me feel secure.

I thnk starting in 10th, I started to really get interested in learning for learning's sake. After you've been in a system for a while you need something to entertain you. And I've found plain curiousity to be more gratifying than pleasure derived from fulfilling an expectation.

Since 10th and especially in 11th, my parents have laxed up on the rules and let me have a social life. Sure at first I had to use the pretense of going to an academic meet or something ( I did but that wasn't the reason I WANTED to go) but eventually I would leave the hour for hour snad they wouldn't say anything to me. Can't wait til I get a car.

so no real reason for this post. just wanted to offer another reason why a Chinese person is "smart" ( just damn good at getting high grades). My paretns "pushed" me not by forcing me to learn but by allowing no other forms of entertainment

dude we havent streotyped anyone...
the fact is if ur family is rich, ur family will push u to study hard.
ppl say only asian ppl study hard, but thats not true at all.
jews study hard but the fact is we cannot really distinguish who jews are among our population cuz they are essentially whites (other than their last names)... and they are rich and send their kids to private high schools...
rich white/black/hispanic/asian families all do that... ppl say asians are nerds and etc, and there are some truth in it. not me but some of my friends only study and thats all they can do. they play the piano and violin and study. many of them are pushed by their parents... but im not, and i dont really care what ppl think of asian ppl anyway.
when i look at nerds (whites/asians nerds) i cannot stop laughing at them cuz they dont know how to enjoy their life... so sad...
and those kids who study bcuz of their parents, they wont succeed in college anyway...

Hey, since the vast MAJORITY of posters on this site are here to vent, if you are ASIAN you should just IGNORE this post and let in bump down util people FORGET about it.

oh, and I know the person that said his parents wouldn't let him have a life, the one that talked about the inferiority/superiority complex. Whatever. he is NOT ASIAN!!!!!! If you believe he is asian than you are NOT ASIAN!!

People, get over it. The vast majority of the RACISTS are immature people, people who use asians as scapgoats and are insecure people trying to get back at society, you take ONE LOOK AT THEM in the eye and know that they will never amount to ANYTHING!!!! (unless the entertainment/basketball industry, but hta's a different story)

RACISTS WHO WANT ATTENTION GO TO THIS THREAD. no, they will not change their opinions. ignore them cuz you have better things in life to do

----(mostly) ethnic chinese here

from now on whoever posts here will be ignored and believed to not be CHinese or asian.

--------------------------END OF DISCUSSION------------------------
sorry, fellas, you'll need to get that fix somewhere else!!!

I never said Asian people were not intelligent, I just argued for the sake of equality. I think intelligence depends on the person regardless of race.

"
It has never occurred to anyone here that the reasons may not be due to pushy parents or constant studying.
Asian people might just be smart! What is wrong with that!

The problem is that American media shelters non-asians from the truth. You never see a report on an Asian child-prodigy on the news, now do you? The technologies that shape our everyday lives are usually originating from China, Japan, Taiwan, or Korea, yet you don't hear of the genius Asian developers of the technology, just the American company that bought the software."

For every "Asian child prodigy" and "genius Asian developers of technology" I will give you 300000 more poor asian farmers still stuck in their home countries. Nevertheless I think you are overlooking common sense in your post. Better test scores usually are the result of preparation. I think it is safe to say that many Asian Americans prepare well for them, but this in no way proves that any race is necessarily "superior" in the long run to the other.

I agree with the post about how education relates directly with income levels most of the time.

Interesting how so many people have stated "end of discussion" and the discussion continues nonetheless.

I'm an Asian, and essentially, who cares? Why do people have to put labels like "Asian" and "White" on each other?

I wouldn't say it is just Chinese kids that get pushed. I would also put Russian/Jewish/Pakistanian/Indian/Japanese/Korean/etc. kids in there too. My friend is Russian and she is currently taking Calculus III, Physics and Microeconomics at a nearby college while she is a junior in high school. She got a very high SAT score (dont remember, very close to 1600), is like 4th in her class and has a gazillion ECs. By the time she graduates out of HS, she will only have to take about 2.5 - 3 years of college classes. She really wants to go to MIT and at this rate she'll probably get there. Yeah, so pretty much most of the minorities that came from Eurasia will succeed because of their parents. Be proud of where you're from!

ryan2288, think before you make a comment
"for every Asian child prodigy I will give you 300000 more poor asian farmers still stuck in their home countries"

how does that make asians less smart than they are? do the uneducated farmers bring down the intelligence of every high achieving asian? Does the fact that the education system is extremely lacking in many Asian countries make the Asian race dumber as a whole?

I agree with you that higher income levels generally correlate with higher test scores, but the truth is that the race with the highest mean income level is caucasian. Since this is true, shouldn't caucasians have higher test scores, and therefore be "smarter?"

The truth is, the richer you are, the more opportunities you have to succeed. However, diligent people are the ones who take up these opportunities. Very often, these people are of Asian descent.

This thread is insulting to Asians everywhere because it degrades them as "people who are only good at school because their parents push them." You should all realize that people who are good at school are hard workers and deserve your admiration, and not to hear your pathetic justifications on how they are not truly smart or talented.

It doesn't really matter if this thread is ended or not. Society's views and prejudices are not swayed by a silly internet discussion forum, so I say we can continue as long as we want, or as long as there is someone to make another stupid prejudice comment.
