where do you go to school now Fallingwater? I know Xi'an is not big for any of the prestigous schools, HYPSM and such, but I feel like I gained so much expereince in this whole college app process that i should help her. i know what my mistakes are now, but i cant go back and do highschool all over again

Wow... 5:00 a.m.... nobody is online right now, of course, but I guess I'm not going to sleep tonight, or maybe i should sleep for an hour then get up and write the rest of my paper in school... alpha adrenergic receptors are so boring how can anyone be expected to write a whole paper on it!?

AlexLi: what is it like going to school in china? i envy u so much... i went to 7th grade for a month in china and loved it, but i imagine highschool is much better. people think in us school is easy, but 10 APs is REALLY not easy... i live on caffine, tylenol/ibuprofen for lack of sleep headaches.. not healthy at all

geez, you are amazing. I'm only taking 4 (i think? maybe 5...geez, can't even remember) and freaked out when i saw the calendar last night... it's only april and i thought we still have like a month 'till the aps

xo......
Pay attention to fallinwater's advice, "do not be the second LiuYiting". Liu's circumstance only works for her, not your cousin. Don't let your cousin limit herself at hypms, or top lac. There are many great choices in america,(not in ranking)comprehensive colleges--- Washington University, Carnegie Mellon, Emory, Rice, University of Chicago, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins, Notre Dame, UT, UVA, UNC Chapel Hill, Tufts, Vanderbilt..... LACs--- Carleton, Vassar, Grinnell, Reed, Washington&Lee, Davidson, Kalamazoo.....
If your cousin really wants to go to hypm, we are not here to stop her dream. But be aware, each of hypms only takes two or three chinese students who hold F-1 visa. My data might be wrong, but those top schools you were talking about do select chinese students with absurd standards. It's usually candidates with internationally recognized awards/achievement admitted by hypms. so your cousin might need some international award, like math, chem, physics olympiate, intel, westin house(not sure for international or only u.s. citizen), or performing arts award......
remember, top schools recruit international students just to enrich its diversity, so with a couple to represent one country is enough. top schools' main purpose is to educate american, if way too many americans applying, the schools may consider expand enrollment. but they don't care how many international students applying........
there are many stories of international admission to tell,

berkeley or carnegie mellon for eecs?? which one is more famous in china

btw, eecs = electrical engineering and computer science

i think berkeley is a lot more "prestigious".. its 45% asian haha.

now that i think about it... it would be much harder for an international student to get in to a us school wouldnt it? do you guys think it would be better if i found her a private highschool here that offers visa? i had a friend that was sooooooo lucky. she came here on a vacation visa (3 month) and she went to school for 3 month then on the last week she went to visit D.C. and stopped by a private school for visit. she applied to their fullscholarship program, and a month later while in china she got a call from the school telling her she got accepted.

maybe i should just set up my credientials in wellesley and possbily get her to go there. we can be like the songmeiling sisters, ha! kidding. i feel like i disappointed my whole family from top to bottom by not getting into HYPSM, but im actually happy with wellesley

can i ask wat happened with liu yiting? i know i might sound naive, hehe, but all i know is that she was accepted to harvard and her parents wrote the book harvard girl (but i never read it) and it stressed writing her thoughts in her diaries.

wellesley is the hypms of all-girl schools. your family should never be disappointed with rejections from hypms which deny thousands of thousands very best american highschool graduates.
btw, i toured wellesley last friday, but don't assume i'm a girl. wellesley campus is absolute paradise with that lake present and looks more like a real college comparing to nearby babson which i got in. boston chinatown is descent sized, hahah, i found some old school steven chow movies there....
what d.c. school is your friend in with scholarship? i'm in d.c. area now.
liu yiting was accepted to harvard, columbia, wellesley, and another girl school(holyoke, barnard, smith, bryn mawr....not sure). i went to the same school she went in china for a couple of years. she studies hard, and she was unbelievably lucky with the "connections" and that espan show talk show she accidentally particapted in america. but for her case, it's a good thing for her, her hardwork totally deserved it. i just don't think everyone else should imitate her model......
it's up to your cousin's choice to go to private high school in u.s. some chinese students directly come to american colleges from china and adopt quickly, some might now, it really depends on your cousin's personality. coming to u.s. earlier can surely show her more college options in america.....
your friend is indeed very lucky!

I want to go to H or Y, but who will not?
My middle school life in Xi'an was unpleasant, although I did pretty good, and was the best in my class, the atmosphere made me sick. Anyway, attending high school in China is not fun at all.

i read that book about liu yi ting. personally, i think her mom kind of cultivated her like a greenhouse plant, planning every step of the way. it's a bit freaky actually. i won't want my parents to breed and rear me like some kind of prize cow. ok, bad analogy but you get my point. and though i admit, she is very, very good, a lot of what she has accomplished is tied to luck. she had lots of fantastic opportunities that given to you and me, we could probably have gotten into harvard with a full scholarship.
do i sound jealous? of course i'm jealous. i'd be abnormal if i wasn't.

Let your cousin makes her decision,I don't believe you can find the fittest school for her unless she picks one by herself.

hey fallinwater, seems like we're both online at the same time. in fact we're posting at the same time

Liu Yiting is nothing more than a "good" student( you know what I am talking about),I read that book 4 years ago( before I got into a very repressive middle school). My dad hoped I can be the second Liu Yiting(I think that's why he gives $8K when he heared that I want to apply Harvard SSP).There are several things about Liu Yiting that might seems extremely ridiculous to the people who understand the situation in America. First, her mom said that she receive some sort of honor for her academic excellence at Harvard, which is the "Honor Roll", 90% of Harvard students received this honor, of course, in my high school, 30% of us get this. Obviously, it is not an honor that worth you to brag. But to the Chinese people, especially those who love Harvard irrationally, it seems like a big deal. Second, the major that Liu Yiting was in is Applied Math, the Applied Math at Harvard sucks.Forgive my opinion,I only recognize majors such as History ,Literature, and Political Science as Harvard's speciality. Third, well, is the most ironic part, Liu Yiting didn't go to a graduate school directly, her mom said that she want to gain some experience and then apply Harvard Business School, this seems unreasonable to me:If Liu Yiting is as excellent as her mom described, how come that she had neither recieve full scholarship to continuing her education nor doing something special?Think about this, an international student without SAT score can get acceptance from Harvard? You guys know this better than I do, that's why there is a book counter her mom's philosophy and rhetorics.

actually...i pity her. i think her mom's a monster. using her daughter as a commercial tool.eek. hey you followed her news quite closely. i haven't heard anything about her in a long time.

and she really didn't take SAT???

Yeah, the only way she can got in is because the senator of Ma. has special connection with Harvard people, yet the senator was graduate from Dartmouth.

and what is her relationship with him anyway??

oh well, i think chinese people heighten the "prestige" importance of a good school. too much competition in china makes us all want to strive to be the TALLEST, BRIGHTEST... makes us all... [color=red]gao(1) fer(1) di(1) neng(2)/color i mean... the first thing a person asked me when i was in china was "what did u get on ur highschool entrance exam" and i was FOURTEEN! i lied and said 460 which is not that great but not TOO bad even though i am going to school in states. here in america, people dont walk up to u and ask u, "whats ur sat score" unless u are already talking about college or u know that person really well.
