yeah I know what you mean, there is definitely a cultural gap. I'm sure out of the all the people there you can find some that you can fit in well with. I don't really think that it's because the school is predominately white. It's really personality and habits that make people a group than race. I fit in with both asian and nonasian groups based on personalities.

ok im probably the dumbest asian here. yeah there are ALOT of asian nerds at my school, taipei american school. alot of people are applying to cornell, washu, u mich, u wash, cornell, u penn, brown, UCs, UT austin, BC, BU, Barnard, georgetown. i agree witht the statement that its alot harder to get into a US school if ur from overseas. eventhough my school is extremely challenging and competitive, very few people get into the Ivies or stanford each year compared to public school studnets in the states.

Hi, everyone.
I hate, hate flu infections.
I have my Chicago interview tomorrow and Northwestern the day after.
I've had a fever for the past three days and right now I can barely stop coughing to talk.
If you guys know anything that will help, please let me know.
Thanks!

Hi, yy0712, wish you the best for your interviews.

As I recall from my U chicago's interview, they ask some quirky and critical thinking questions, just be prepared and take a nice sleep tonight.....
And cough drops might help...
hehe

Heya sugarplumfairy, I'm from Taiwan too :O However, I live in Spain... How is your college selection going?

hey that's cool that you live in spain! i have a friend who went to my school and goes to st. louis university in madrid...i think. my college apps were done back in december...like the 3rd. are you a senior? i got into washu early d (in st. louis) so im relaxed now. good luck in school!

You know, I really have problems with being on time for interviews.
I was twenty minutes late to my first interview in Downtown because I couldn't find the right building. So yesterday, I was so determined to be on time and actually thought that I would be at first.
Since my interview was at a school, I was searching for the library then realized that I didn't have too much time left so decided to take a shortcut across the courtyard. Not until I was in the courtyard, however, did I realize that all the doors locked on me from the inside. So I was trapped in the middle of the school for a very long time.
So yes, I was late again.

yy0712 - I was kind of like that too, but what I did was always come leave 20 minutes early so that I can make sure that I'll be on time. Also, I suggest you drive to the exact interview place a few days before so you know exactly where you are supposed to go.

I will definitely be sure to do so next time!

How many of you guys are going to be in China for Chinese New Year? I haven't gone back during the winter since I left and miss the new year spirits alot

"In China, only HYPMSC seems to be popular. Most people there don't know many beyond that."

haha, yes, I totally agree! My uncle gave me a lecture last summer when I went back to visit that "if you can get into harvard, don't go to princeton; if you can get into Princeton, don't go to Yale; if you can get into Yale, don't go to Stanford; if you can get into Stanford, don't go to Berkeley; and if you can get into Berkeley, don't go to that Los Angeles school (meaning UCLA)." They don't understand the factors of finaid and scholarships that often change people's decision, or that there are things called Liberal Arts schools. My mom had to lie to my uncle last time he called, telling him I applied to Harvard and ALL the Ivies, haha, or else he would have been very upset. I'm just thinking...I wonder what I'll tell my relatives if I end up getting into/choosing Pomona.

I know, and they don't care about personality differences among the schools. They just think that if you go to Harvard, everything will be right.

Yes, and they assume that we have to decide majors before we go to college like them. So everyone asks me what I'm going to major in, and I'm like, I'm undecided. When I was back there last summer, I told a lot of people Humanities ("wen") when they asked, and they just stared at me for, like 10 seconds, before going "Oh! Wen is good! you can be a lawyer!" hahaha. What's really funny is that everyone replied the same way. Everyone. hehe.

It's always interesting to see how Berkeley's undergrad even got so famous in China. Cal is great for grad school and excellent for post grad...but undergrad...OMG....

Any one see the news about the chinese girl who got accepted by Harvard EA this year? .....Quite amusing......

what's wrong with Berkeley's undergrad? I'm just curious cuz I don't know much about it.

Well I read in the news about this Chinese girl who got in Harvard EA this year, but did we read about the same girl? lol I read mine on the Chinese newspaper I think and her dad published the article.

Berkeley's undergrad is fine but not quite on par with Stanford (as in darkling's example). IMHO Berkeley's undergrad is also inferior to schools like Dartmouth, U Chicago and the elite LACs.

There's nothing really "wrong" with Berkeley's undergrad. It provides huge lectures (400 ppl+) to underclassmen. Many of the school's classes are taught by Teaching Assistants (graduate students, not professor). Students often don't get adquate indivual attention and one needs to be very self-motivated to excel at the school. If one likes these, then Berkeley is great.

Most chinese family perceive Berkeley as a "top top" school...
While it certainly is a good school, it's not an elite undergrad.

oh I see, yeah lots of public universities are like this I guess. Well, at least it's cheaper, especially for in state students.

wait, about the article, was it on a International Chinese girl?

agree about public university on the tuition thing for in state...but I suppose most chinese families don't qualify for "in-state" UC Berkeley tuition...;)

About the girl...she's from shanghai and went to sidwell for a year...
Very interesting to see the media fever in China about the girl...hehe.... But I guess it's kind of good because she is "atypical" under the chinese "test-only" educational system and her acceptance hopefully will change the chinese educational system....

hehe very interesting. Sad, there aren't that many atypical Chinese applicants.

I think major reason why Berkeley got famous in China is that there are so many Chinese there and they have many aboard programs in China. I heard that many students can complete their fourth undergrad year in Peking University.

Really? If I try to complete my fourth year in Peking Univ. with my Chinese right now, I'd fail every class for sure :)
