i finally found this forum!you guys r truly amazing(harvard.pton.MIT.........)ENVYING
i am now a jonior in a boarding school, this is my first half year in US.i really feel it's a tough start.making friends,accent,SAT,TOFEL.......i really wanna go to a good college.but i don't know if i got enough time to make up english.and i feel like it's really hard to make friends.since the people here don't study at all,i am sacred they will call me nerd or watever.
i was top 10 in middle school.and went to the best high school in chengdu.i guess i am kinda like tipical goodies.since i studied all day long, like stay up till 1 everynight also weekends,i realized my knowleage of American culture made a huge gap in front of me...sigh...though my english is good than most of international students when they first came here.the big problem is my personality is like really shy, traditional, precious.i tried really hard, like force myself to listen rock, shaking hip, being weird.but still not quite myself.
anyway,my friends used to call me "homework queen" or hardworking.i believe i won't give up on either study or social life.i really hope we can meet together in Ivies.
ps:i will take new SAT on march
pre-teat score:verbal 400-500
math 800
wirting :600(low essay score)
sorry about wat i wrote..........extremely random.lol

Hey guys,
I live in Australia, but originally from Shanghai. Came when i was six so although I can speak fluent Chinese (and Shanghainese) I can't write it very well. Anyway, I went on an exchange to Maine, USA last year and I had the time of my life. THe idea to apply for college in the states was really inspired by all these students working at their college apps. Plus, some of the schools I visited had AMAZING campuses.

I wish the best of luck to all of you (and I can totally relate to the whole HYP mentally that parents adopt). Personally going to a LAC would be awesome.....considering they concentrate on their undergrads.

Fingers crossed till April 1st

Hey Millan Zhang. I'm also a Chinese student living in the states, and I've been here for about 3 years now. I can totally understand your situation as I myself have gone through a period of time to adjust to the American culture. I wasn't much of a nerd back in China, but worked really hard after I came here, as I felt I shouldn't waste this opportunity to receive American education. Glad to see that you're making a full use of this opportunity, too, and I'm sure that all the hard work will pay off in the end.

Don't worry about your English. It'll improve quickly as time goes by. Also for the social aspect of your high school life, you don't need to try that hard to fit in if it makes you uncomfortable. You'll be able to make some good friends and improve your oral English if you talk to others and participate in activities.

Anyway, welcome to CC!

hey,sweetbee03
you r my sweet hero, lol.i am now more sure and confident about my target.you r right,i still remenber the situation i got the visa in chengdu, tough VO,and eacaping hard school life to receive a better education here.i really don't have much time to waste.i know if i make as much effort as in china,my goal will finally came true.so is yours,:)
i saw your SAT ,SAT2....score.it's amazing.envying moreJ\K
i have a question, how do you guys improve your vocabulary?
BTW,what subjests you took on SAT2?i mean which one do you think we can take adavantage?
thanks a million for your help, talk to ya l8r:)

I'm sure you guys can improve easily. This experience is pretty common to new Chinese immigrants. It's really about how hard and efficiently you work. You'll do fine on ur SATs even if you came later. My cousin came only two years ago and she got a 700 on her verbal SATs.

for real?i thought it was impossible to get over 550 no matter hard i work in only two years, anyway,it's awesome to meet you guys.i told my friends i found a website, the people there came here just for few years, they all got perfect score, she was like"oh.welll,i guess chinese r gonna take over the world in 20 years."lol

It's so hard to stay focused now the second semester of the senior year. But I'm so motivated after reading these posts! And no more procrastination. I had to write this 20 page analysis on Capote's In Cold Blood and finished like 6:30 am, an hour before school started. Yeah, don't be like me.
Sweetbee--I live in TX too (Sugar Land); Did you apply to UT?

Hey yy0712, I'm in H-town, so we're pretty close actually...
Yeah I applied to UT, got into McCombs already, how about you?
I, too, am procrastinating on my IB-projects at this time. Still have to work on my Computer Science Dossier and Art History research work book. Gosh so much work, and all of the IB things have to be turned in after Spring break...

OK, I should be studying right now, instead of reading new posts on CC...

Congrats! I applied to plan II and dean's scholars. Haven't heard from them yet. What school do you go to? Bellaire?
Okay, should go study for bio now. Those stupid plants and fungi...

What do you guys plan to major in?

political science, international relations, economics, finance or ... in fact, it's really confusing!

Architecture, you guys know that, maybe comparative literature or art history could be my second major.

For those of you who asked, here is PR's list of Toughest Schools To Get Into:

The PR top 20 this year are:

1 Massachusetts Institute of Technology
2 Princeton University
3 California Institute of Technology
4 Yale University
5 Harvard College
6 University of Pennsylvania
7 Stanford University
8 Swarthmore College
9 Duke University
10 Columbia University - Columbia College
11 Georgetown University
12 Brown University
13 Pomona College
14 Amherst College
15 Dartmouth College
16 University of California-Berkeley
17 Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering
18 Harvey Mudd College
19 Emory University
20 University of Virginia

Good Luck to you all.

Deep Springs, Cooper Union, Williams should be on the list as well while Emory, UVA, and UC Berkeley are quite a bit "easier" than how they appear.

yy0712, I don't go to Bellaire. I do know many people from there and I heard the competition is crazy~~

I am attending a school in HISD. Supposedly it's the best one in HISD, but compared to Bellaire it's far less competitive.

What school do you go to? And, is Clements high in Sugar Land?
