<p>Would anyone happen to know about how many applications Choate has received this year? Also how many spots are usually available for freshman boarders?</p>
There are a few of us asking this question in another March 10 thread entitled, "Record number of Applicants. . . " . So far, no stats for Choate, however from my research it looks as if historically they receive around 2000 applications for around 265 spots (200 for freshman is my guess on that number- minus percentage of day students-- 25%?) Those of course are 2012 and 2013 numbers. The March 10th cycle of posts indicate that all schools received a large increase of applicants (Common Core standards? International?) this year, with many admissions office letters stating that it was a “Record year” for applications to their school.
I’m a current Choate freshman so I’ll just try to give you some more closely guesstimated numbers. Over the last few years, Choate has been trying to increase the amount of freshmen they accept while decreasing the amount of sophomores to balance it out. The class of 2018 has about 175 students with about 45 being day students. The amount of applications received is probably around 2,300.
That’s interesting @prepschoolhopes about increasing Freshman admits and decreasing Sophomore admits. Do you have any insight on why?

It has something to do with them not liking the concept of the grade basically doubling sophomore year. They want more four-year students. The total amount of students who matriculate senior year will not be affected. They just had to switch some dorms from sophomore to freshman to make the change. For reference, I think we are only supposed to get about 40-50 new sophomores next year, rather than in the past when it would be many more.
