Choate Application Tips?

Hey guys, I'm an eighth grader considering applying to Choate for freshman year. To kids who have applied, how did it go for you? What made the application process easy/difficult? Did you get accepted/waitlisted/rejected? If you could do the application over, what would you have done differently?

Hi! I applied to Choate last year and was waitlisted, I’m applying again this year. I actually liked the GoChoate application much more than other schools. I feel like it gives you more room to really explain your activities and is more personality based rather than stat based. I didn’t find the Choate application too hard to complete. Just beaware of the January 10th deadline, most other schools have a January 15th deadline. I remember a few applicants last year sent their applications in late because they didn’t realize this.

My advice is to just be yourself in the interview and don’t wait to write your essays or you may feel rushed (I know I did last year, when I wrote them during winter break). Try to get a high score on the SSATs but don’t stress too much over them. If you haven’t scheduled your interview yet, be sure to call in soon or there will not be many open spots.

My stats weren’t that impressive last year so I was surprised when I got waitlisted. I’m sure it was my interview and essays that helped the most.

Good Luck!!

Thanks so much for the advice! In the interview, what kind of clothing do you suggest wearing? I would assume to dress nicely, but how formal exactly? I go to a public school in Florida, so I have no clue :)

I typically wear a blazer, button down, khakis, dress shoes, and a tie. I would suggest this if you can afford to purchase them or borrow a family member’s.

Here is some advice from the Choate website:

What should you expect during the interview?

The interview is an opportunity for you to offer a more complete picture of yourself than is possible on an application.

Interviewers don’t have a pre-determined script, but they tend to ask questions that require a bit of self-reflection — your interests, motivations and personality traits. Remember that what you wear and how you present yourself will affect the interviewer’s perception of you and your seriousness of purpose. You should bring or be prepared to ask any questions that you may have about Choate.

After the interview is finished, the applicant will have a chance to relax while parents are invited for a conversation with the interviewer. Again, questions are welcome.

One last question…what do they mean by a graded essay? It’s probably an obvious answer, but I am clueless.

@nygiants97: An essay that you had to do for school that was graded by a teacher.

Does it have to be from the current school year?

I would think the more recent, the better. Note that I would choose one that you think reflects your writing style or an interesting challenge as opposed to one with the highest grade.
