Choate current students

Hi:). I think I've made the decision to go to Choate. I just wanted to hear about current students opinions of Choate and what they like/dislike about it. Thanks!

anyone???

i am a choate student! i would suggest looking at some of the other choate threads because there are A TON about this topic!!

Whenever i make a search it just comes up with “Chance me” threads :/

There are lots of Choate students on this forum, actually…
Do you have any particular questions?

Well, at my school now, I’m in all honors classes and one AP class, and I NEVER have homework that I can’t complete during my one hour study hall. Is it going to be a difficult transition?

I’m not sure if it’ll be difficult for you in particular because I don’t know your study habits, but it’ll definitely take some adapting. Honors and AP classes really are honors and AP classes that can assign homework that takes an hour each day if you take your time to do your work thoroughly. You’ll be taking 5 or 6 classes a term, meaning on the worst days you might have 6 hours of homework… Of course these days are few and far inbetween, but you will definitely have to change some of your study habits to accomodate.

Thanks! Also, what’s a normal day like?

The school day is typically 8-3, with Wednesdays from 8-12:30. After classes, sports practice (the times vary for different sports). The various clubs on campus like to hold meetings around 6-7. Study hours are from 7:30 to 9 and 9:45 to around 11, which is when you’re supposed to go to sleep. It might sound like a lot, but you’ll have a handful of free periods, which might include a nice sleep-in or two :)

I think I might go to Choate and like what I am hearing. I’ll be going to visit the campus for the very first time on March 29 and think Choate will be the best choice for me. Can’t wait! My package didn’t say anything about an academic stipend, and I’m a FA student… Other schools have said they’ll pay my books… Do any of you guys know anything about this topic? Many people I know that have been accepted weren’t notify if they’ll cover the cost of books.

Sounds great fyre!! And I don’t think I got one either bronx…

I’m sure if you sent an email or even better called the FA office that they could answer that for you! The AO has calmed down a bit now that M10 has passed so they may pick up the phone quicker. Here is a sample of my normal day:

Wake up-7
Breakfast in Hill House- 7:40
Spanish
Free
Physics
Physics Lab
English
Free(Lunch)
Math- ends at 2:50

sports practice 4:30-6
dinner-6:45
homework 7:30-9
break-9-9:30

(this is my monday schedule…each day of the week it changes but this is a guideline)

zdoub99 and BronxKid,

Any other questions?

How strict are the study periods for Sophomores? Are you in your dorm or have no internet access etc? And how strict are the lights outs?

Well the amount of homework you’ll have will really depend on what classes you take. I know that my junior year I went to bed after midnight every night, but I also took 6 classes all three terms all honors/AP and played a sport every term. Same goes for senior fall. I think it just depends on your schedule. I know a fair amount of people who do not stay up as late as I, but then again not everyone takes the same classes. If you get work done during your frees (if you have any) then you would have less to do at night…but realistically you won’t have to much time to do work during the day especially if you take 6 classes.

Hey thanks, but that didn’t really answer the question I was asking
I just wanted to know if you’re FORCED to have a supervised study period and how they control it.
And for lights out do they go into your room and switch the lights off? Or do you have more freedom.
Basically, I’m asking about the level of freedom in Choate and if you’re “babied”

@tarsier

It really depends on your dorm and the rules in your dorm. we (4th formers) are expected to be in our rooms for study hours but we can go to the library with permission from the advisor on duty. As restrictive as these hours may seem, I actually love them. You know that everyone else is in their room studying so you don’t feel as if you are missing out on any fun. Internet is on until 11 pm for sophomores. This may seem early to some, but I don’t think I’ve had any instances this year where I have needed internet after 11 pm on weekdays. --and if you really need it for work quickly, your prefects may be nice and let you use theirs since they have it until later  --on weekends its on until midnight. in my dorm lights out is not too strict and you can always get late lights if you need more time. if you know that you have a lot of work though and want late lights you can’t go out for break from 9-9:30.

@tarsier,

Like yellow said, it really depends on which dorm you’re in. For sophomores, there are set study hours from 7:30-9 and from 9:45-11. Some dorms are extremely lax, and I know some dorms are really strict about study hours. My dorm, for example, is one of the less strict dorms. We can always lounge about in the common room during study hours and then my prefects don’t really care much about lights being on after lights out… Just as long as you don’t make too much noise. The general rule is, however, that you HAVE to be in your room with your door open during study hours and the dorm advisor on duty is supposed to come around to each of your rooms and check you in, but really it’s not that strict most of the time. Internet cuts off at 11, Facebook cuts off at 7:30 for sophomores and there really isn’t any effective way to get around that unless of course you use a smart phone. If you feel that you have too much homework to finish in one night, you can always request late lights from your advisory and prefects, and most of the time they’ll give it to you.

How is the school spirit at sporting events?

There’s a group called the Boar Pen, and they pretty much go all-out (body paint, crazy screaming, you get the idea) at sporting events.

The biggest sporting day of the year is Deerfield Day, which is when we beat Deerfield at nearly all fall term sports and, if we’re on their campus, some people will try to step on their seal (which is, strangely enough, on the floor).
