Choate/deerfield

I found it on amazon in paperback for $7.90. (Edit: that's the price for a used copy)At that price you can't afford not to buy it. I'm reasonably sure that the version that they're selling is the same version published 20 years ago--it's just that real prep culture hasn't changed that much since then.

It's not still in print. You have to get it from a used book store or something. Mine was in St. Augustine.

Thanks. I guess I'll order a used book for nostalgia.

Yeah, probably everyone that is going to prep school next year should read it. lol

whoever said most people want single? that's not true...at hotchkiss, we fight for the doubles, since there are so few in upperclass dorms

ew..i am not a fan of the preppy handbook...at Choate there are those people that fit under the standards of the book and could be described as preps. but most of the more "popular" students are ones from NYC who went to schools like Horace Mann, Brearly, Chapin, Spence, Nightingale, Dalton, Allen-Stevenson or people from long island...they would never wear polo, only barneys and bergorfs (city people will know those)...those are the real preps at Choate, Deerfield, a lot at Hotchkiss (maybe I am wrong, bearcats will know)

OK...showing my age but this book is about 25 years old, and even back then it was more of a spoof rather than anything to be taken remotely seriously.

It's so funny, though. Have you seen the map?

Yes..it is funny. So is this..

Preppy is definetaly not a bad thing. it just depends what you're looking for. At the moment, Choate is trying to become preppier in my opinion.

hahhaha how is choate trying to become preppy?

are they trying to accept less of the NY crowd?

They're trying to accept MORE of the NY crowd. More kids from Manhattan, who went to prestigious schools before Choate, and less from the surrounding boroughs.

more NY kids to be preppy?

ps, does this affect California chances in any way?

We seem to be getting away from your original question. As someone who went to Choate, had a brother who went to Deerfield - I will try to answer your question. However, rather than doing a pro/con analysis, let me just point out differences - after all my pro may be your con.

Housing - Deerfield has fewer large dorms than Choate. Also, Deerfield has a lot more single rooms. At Choate singles (especially for 9th and 10th graders) are much tougher to come by. Both tend to put 9th and 10th graders together, rather than spreading them through the various houses.

Personality - I do think Deerfield is preppier and that Choate tends to be more diverse. I would also say Choate tends to have more "arty" kids, probably because it has such a great arts center. Deerfield tends to be more conservative/tradition conscious - i.e. dress code, sit down meals, etc.

Location - Choate is in Wallingford, which is not a particularly pretty town. However, it does offer more amenities and is only a 25 minute train ride to New Haven. If you live in NYC area, it's also easier to get home on weekends (train from Wallingford to New Haven, then train to NYC). Deerfield is more rural. I basically decided Deerfield was not for me while visiting the school when the wind shifted and suddenly the whole campus smelled of cow manure. However, Old Deerfield is filled with old colonial houses and very scenic in a quaint New England way.

Academics - Both schools have top notch academics. Choate is a little larger and will have more electives, broader course selection.

Admission - Choate and Deerfield used to be equally competative. In the last few years I think it's harder to get into Deerfield. Both schools have a longstanding rivalry.

omg you need to chill. you'll find out if you got in in march.

Thanks so much, prpdd! I'm going to PM you about Choate. :D When did you go there?

CT, this is where I disagree...preppier kids from Greenwich, LI, surrounding areas, more sophisticated fron NYC...California, in my opinion, falls more to the sophisticated side than the preppy.

Excuse me, when I said preppy, I meant more rich kids with well-connected parents.

I went there in 70's so some of my info. is probably dated. When I was there, Rosemary Hall had a separate campus. Dorms, gym, classrooms, dining room were all located about 1/3 mile from main Choate campus, which definitely made it less of a coed experience. I think they've now turned most of the old RH campus into admin buildings and faculty housing and the school is completely coed.

As for Deerfield, when my brother went there it was a single sex school, which gave it a very different feel. Stranding 500 adolescent boys together in rural Massachusetts can create a pretty intense vibe.
