How strict is the dress code at Choate (for girls)? It says "dressy top with sleeve or collar"... What would you say qualifies as dressy? What qualifies as a "sleeve" (like would short sleeve shirts be ok)? Thanks!

Anybody? Please? I know there quite a few Choate students/parents out there, what do girls usually wear during the day?

PM ChoatieMom she could probably tell you

Dress code for girls is EXTREMELY relaxed. Most girls go to class in t shirts, short shorts, and flip flops. Dress code for guys, on the other hand, is more strict and enforced.

By “dressy”, I assume you’re referring to Special Dress? Special Dress is used for special programs, convocation, etc. For girls it is simply a dress (thats what 99% of girls tend to wear) with nice shoes. Hope I helped!

Recent graduate (‘13) here: dress code is very relaxed. Nice shirts are fine (nothing strapless without a cardigan and you’re not technically supposed to have anything without sleeves, but you can typically get away with that. Shorts are supposed to be of a reasonable length, but there’'s no official, enforced rule. Special dress is required for some events (you’ll know in advance), and is just typically a dress or nice blouse and dress slacks. Some events will require more “professional” special dress, but again, you’ll know that well in advance so you can get a suit/blazer if you don’t have one handy.

Thanks confusedonhades, BronxKid, and fortydos!

BronxKid, actually, the “dressy top” was the description for Academic Dress, but it’s good to know that the dress code is relatively relaxed!

Yeah, “dressy” doesn’t have to actually be all that dressy… You’ll learn what you can get away with very quickly hahaha

I second fortydos^. You’ll see when you get here

Honestly I think the girl’s dress code is pretty easy and casual compared to guys. Collared shirt tucked in.

To clarify what westcoastchich23 said, normal class dress for boys dictates that a shirt has to be tucked in only if it has tails (i.e. no need to tuck polos). That being said, guys must be wearing a collared shirt during classes, even if they are wearing a sweater/quarterzip. Special dress is a blazer and khakis. Suits are rarely (if ever) necessary.

Hey I go to Choate and the girls class dress code is pretty okay. You can wear shirts that have sleeves (no tank tops or tube tops), or if they don’t have sleeves wear a cardigan over it. If its really hot you can sometimes get away with wearing no sleeve dresses. Also you can’t wear graphic Tshirts or any apparel with writing on it. You can’t wear anything made out of blue, black, or grey denim. This year, colored denim is allowed. Technically, shorts are supposed to be mid thigh length but mostly everyone wears short shorts. You also can’t wear bodycon dresses or skirts, which is new this year. Leggings need to be worn under skirts, dresses, or shorts, but you can get away with wearing just leggings and a shirt every once in a while depending on your teachers. Definitely no sweatshirts as well. You also can’t wear athletic clothes like running shorts, shirts, etc. if you have any other questions, just ask.
