What's it like there? I'm going to their summer program and they're my top high school choice so I was only wondering if it's fun, or not. I've never been there before.

I’m the parent of a current student, so from that perspective, I can only tell you that my S (in his second year there) will only come home if the school is officially closed! On the realistic side, I will add that courses are demanding, but I think anyone interested in going to these schools thrives on that, and being surrounded by peers who are equally motivated. I think one thing that Choate does particularly well is balance a strong emphasis on academics, with sports, cultural, and other extracurricular activities, so that students have a well-rounded lifestyle. Dances take place just about every Saturday, and there is a town with restaurants and movie theater in walking distance to the school (which is considered part of the campus so students can go anytime that they aren’t required to be in the dorm). I don’t know if that answers the “fun” aspect, but hopefully some current students will weigh in on that.

how do you sign up for choate summer classes?

hey, what program are you applying to?

I am applying to the academic enrichment program.

Hope to see you there! (even though I wouldn’t know what you looked like so I wouldn’t know if you were there or not - I’ll stop babbling now)

AAH! thanks so much, I have not really had a chance to scroll through them yet, but I know that any international studying is out of the question = (. But I hear that the programs are really fun and prepare you for a Boarding School expirence, which I hope to have in the somewhat distant future! Thanks so much for the link, it was really helpful!

Hi, since this is a Choate thread, how much pressure and stress is there from schoolwork at Choate?

Eddytie- I just wrote another post about the amount of work my kids have had at Choate. They have a LOT of work. However, the school has different levels of classes, and seem to be fairly flexible about moving up and down levels if you’re in over your head. Also, they don’t accept kids unless they feel that they are capable of succeeding.

As a four year senior at Choate, I can honestly say that the work load is one of the things i wish were different about Choate. Freshman year is considered a transition year and they try not to drown you. Sophmore year is surely a step up from Freshman year, but with study habits and organization it is definitely possible to get it all done. Junior year however is AWFUL. there is so much work and unlike senior year, there are minimal perks to junior year on the whole. And then senior year comes and you don’t think things can get worse than Juinor year but boy are you wrong. On top of college apps and an INSANELY busy schedule, the work load from junior year continues if not increasing. Senior Fall and winter and brutal but i absolutely CANNOT wait for senior spring- only 2 more weeks!

Overall, the workload is a major component of this school- students are motivated and work extremely hard. Dont be surprised if you were a straight A+ student in middle school and you find yourself struggling. Students here work hard and i sometimes feel that the academic shark-tank atmosphere prevades over the entire school community. this is something i wish i considered before attending but once you accept the insane amount of work, you can focus on things beyond tests and grades.

hope this helps!

Thanks Choatie10 and baystateresident!

Choatie10- I hear you- I just had a similar phone conversation about an hour ago. Hang in there! Spring break is coming soon!

It’s my junior year, and I must say the workload is brutal…I know it’ll pay off though…

I have a bunch of friends at Choate who really love the school and all it has to offer.
