Hey everyone. I know this is last minute, but I really can't decide. I got accepted into Choate, Hotchkiss, NMH, and Princeton Day School, but I crossed off the last two. I am looking at Choate and Hotchkiss. I visited them the past week, and they are both terrific schools that I love. Now, they have flaws too. For me, I am a dancer, though I do not want to pursue a career in dance, I do want to continue in high school. I like to paint and play lacrosse. What I liked about Choate was that it had a less strict dress code, although I don't really care. Also, you could easily go into town, while Hotchkiss was more reserved. My big thing was, I feel like in Choate, I will be in an asian crowd (I'm chinese, but live in America). I'm not saying that I hate asians, it's just that because there are so many, I feel that people will expect me to be friends with only asians. In Hotchkiss, I felt only a tiny bit less welcoming, but I thought I would be able to be friends with a diverse crowd. Can someone please tell me if these two schools are truly welcoming on the inside, or do they just say that? Also, is there something particular that someone liked about either school? Thank you so much, guys!

Oh my gosh, those were the exact same two schools I had to choose between. In the end I chose Choate because, basically, the campus was better (different buildings for each subject), more students (more diversity, better chances of meeting some people you fit in with), and it’s in/near a town (going down there on the weekends, getting stuff you need for school). Plus I just liked the ‘vibe’ I got from there a lot better, it seemed a little more fun and less stuffy than Hotchkiss. :)

Okay, so I’m going to Hotchkiss next fall and I totally didn’t get the “less welcoming” feel that you’re talking about. IMO, everyone was really nice and warm. This is kind of going against everything aubreygal said, but I really liked that there were less students at Hotchkiss because I feel like it’s more of a community. There’s also a much lower day student population, so it really gives a “boarding” school experience if that makes sense. Being from LA, I love that Hotchkiss is sort of in the middle of nowhere because I’m realllly sick of the city, but that’s just me haha. Also, I personally think it’s nice that all the classes are in one building (except for science), but again, thats just me. Good luck with your decision and I hope I helped a little!

exactly I want to be in a diverse crowd. I was about to respond to Hotchkiss saying that I chose it, but then I thought some more. I am really interested in science and I might want to become a doctor. The pro about Choate is that they have more specialized programs. Ex: the science research program, Arts Concentration program, and economic program. That way, I could attend the science, and not be just a regular chinese girl that likes art when it comes to college application. But I also really like Hotchkiss, and it was VERY welcoming, I just felt more comfortable in Choate. I really want to just choose Hotchkiss, but im hindering on my decision. Can anyone that goes to any one of those schools help?

@swimmer744 I’m kinda bummed I’ll never get the chance to meet you, but who knows, maybe I’ll see you at sporting events! :D

@Dancer4ever333 Try looking around the board for previous posters who are affiliated with either schools. I know there are a lot from Choate and quite a few from Hotchkiss that you can PM if you find them first. Maybe try searching “choate” or "hotchkiss’ and something will come up.

haha yeah maybe! :)

I chose Hotchkiss haha. But only because my parents filled out the paperwork. HOnestly, both are great schools, and I think I can succeed in either. So swimmer, I might see you!

ahh cool! what grade are you going into?

An incoming prep =)

Congrats on your decision, you really couldn’t go wrong either way! Haha :D

False, Going to Choate would have been going the wrong way. ha, i joke, i joke, they’re both amazing school some of my best friends here are Choaties, nice kids.

^ Hahah I hope they’re all that nice! ;)
