CHOATE vs. LAWRENCEVILLE

are you suggesting that international students aren't well represented at Hotchkiss/Lawrenceville/Choate?

or that Andover is the only US boarding school with international appeal? that's quite a bold statement indeed (not to mention flat out wrong).

Oh, god no!! Olivia and I are just debating over why I believe I would benefit from going to a school in a different region from which I leave. Not at all saying that international students are under/over represented in a particular top prep. school...

Noo, definitely not. I'm SAYING that at any of those prep schools, you're going to get an international student body and that most of them aren't filled with rich, white kids.

Exactly the opposite of what you were saying.

Thanks, Jane. :)

who's to say that those international kids aren't rich and white?

through globalism, people in developed countries -- especially the most wealthy -- are becoming more and more like each other every day. my international friends have cute accents and exotic adresses, but they have been very americanized, and i know that any kid from the bronx/rural alaska can add more "diversity" than they ever could.

I'm sorry, Blair. Plenty of people from America who go to these prep schools aren't rich/white, either. I'm just pointing out many kids from under-represented countries (or parts of the US, as I said, and thanks for pointing that out too) who add DIVERSITY to the school. I didn't mean rich and white. Jane just alluded to that when she was talking about kids from MA.

Thank you everyone. i am going to the revisit on march 26 for choate and march 30 for l'ville. I hope ill be able to figure it out by then...
If anyone goes to school at choate or l'ville it would be helpful to know what it was like and if u liked it.
thank youu.

itshelenmelon PLEAES do post your observations on the forum I will be very interested in getting your impressions of Choate

Good for you, helenmelon! I know it's a long way for you, but this is such an important decision and it really makes sense for you to make it wisely and armed with as much information as possible. I hope you can share your impressions. I'm very curious as to how you view both of these schools.

Thank you! i will definitely put my observations on this forum and inform all of you on which school i will decide on!
puts notebook into suitcase

sorry, olivia - i didn't mean it like that, really.. i just saw your one post, not the ones above, and thought i would clarify something. seems you already were. :)

Even though Choate is known for arts, Lawrenceville is really good too in that area. I'd say the campus of Lawrenceville is a little more "home-y", but both are great schools.

My friend loves Lawrenceville. Her username is jlg something I think. I forget the numbers =) If you want you can ask her about it. And six people from my school went there last year. They all love it.

cool olivia! is choate good at sports?

Both are good at sports. Lawrenceville has an amazing lacrosse program. It doesn't play against Choate and Andover and Exeter; it plays against schools in its area, like Peddie, Blair, and MAPL schools I think. Or maybe I'm wrong about MAPL. But I know that L'ville doesn't play against most schools you hear on this board.

"But I know that L'ville doesn't play against most schools you hear on this board."
they used to for male football, male ice hockey and lax (the biggest ones) , but this stopped recently becoz of the distance i think

which one is better academically??

This is both true and untrue.

Lawrenceville's geographical distance from (and - over time - a reduction of sporting events - and resulting reduced association with) its New England peers seems to have been a major factor in L-ville losing some visibility over the last decade or so - e.g., L-ville now seems to have re-focused its athletic schedule around MAPL opponents.

Had Lawrenceville kept up its active athletic ties with its famous New England counterparts, e.g. Exeter and Andover, L-ville's visibility and status would not have taken an undeserved hit over time (yeah, L-ville used to play most of the major NE preps in football) -- Let's face it, MAPL has a number of excellent schools, but it doesn't compare to the New England Prep Association.

That said, L-ville does still continue to retain some athletic ties with a number of New England preps, e.g.:

vs. Choate in football and lacrosse (and until recently vs. Deerfield annually in football)

vs. Hotchkiss boy's tennis

vs. Exeter girl's hockey

vs. Taft boy's hockey

vs. Kent School boy's hockey
etc...

All of that said Lawrenceville still remains one of the nation's most prestigious schools nonetheless. Historically, the "little three" feeder schools to the "Big Three" - HYP (Harvard, Yale and Princeton) was traditionally:

Exeter -> Harvard
Andover -> Yale
Lawrenceville -> Princeton

For those interested in a bit of academic history, those three elite prep schools (Exeter, Andover, Lawrenceville) came together with Harvard, Yale and Princeton to discuss setting national standards for graduating HS seniors / entering college freshmen. Together they produced a working paper which laid the groundwork for what ultimately became the AP exams:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AP_Exams

Bottom line?

Lawrenceville continues to be one of the best prep schools in the nation - it also has an amazing campus (one of the very few prep schools with a golf course).

btw, this is an interesting thread (i'm not advocating or criticizing it, just thought it was an interesting read / view of one person's opinion) and am posting it because it is relevant to this discussion (Choate vs. Lawrenceville and other preps):

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=41245

"Go to Andover, Lawrenceville, Taft, Hotchkiss, St. Paul's (the one I hold the highest regard for based on the words of others), Milton, maybe Groton over Choate. Go to Choate over Exeter (place creeps me out), Deerfield and all schools below that level."

LOL i think he/she said choate over deerfield possibly becoz of the choate/deerfield rivalry? LOL i just find it kinda funny

i also heard from my friend from L'ville that the notion that L'ville being a feeder to princeton is skewed becoz since it's so close to princeton, there are a lot of princeton faculty kids and also more princeton legacies. Merely going to L'ville doesnt give u a better shot to princeton
