Choate Waitlist Update

Greetings from Choate,

As of 5:00 PM April 9th 2010, we are close to our enrollment "numbers" or limits in every grade but still do not have a final tally.

We are examining each class to see if we have an opportunity to make additional offers. If you have a deadline for tomorrow, expect that we will have a message out to you by 11:00 AM at the latest. If you haven't heard from us by that time and you have a deadline to commit to another school, it would make sense to commit to that school and not risk losing your space there.

Unfortunately, we have also learned that out financial aid budget has not returned to "positive territory" meaning any offers we make from this point will not include financial aid.

Please understand that a tremendous amount of information continues coming into our office. This email is an attempt to help families who need to make decisions and to keep you as up to date as possible. I appreciate your understanding.

Sincerely,

Ray Diffley III
Director of Admission

They mean they’ll (try to) make decisions about waitlisted people by tomorrow?
That’s nice!
I didn’t apply to Choate though

this isnt something positive… but a girl just said yes to Choate for next year as a freshman. (sorry anyone) :(

After I saw this I said, “No hope for me.”
I guess my only chance at boarding school is Deerfield now.
Positive thinking!

Can one go from 2nd choice school to 1st choice school next year? or the current #2 school won’t support you leaving next year, in terms of recs etc.?

This is good news for me, but probably not for some others…

Awful for me, I’m on the financial aid waitlist. So I guess that means the FA waitlist is closed? Just a note-- there are two distinct waitlists, one regular, one FA. Different letters and everything. But the latter is screwed now, right?

Does this mean that no one will be accepted from the waitlist?
Or does this mean that if you get accepted, you’ll be full pay?

I think the latter. But does it mean that if you’re accepted, you’ll be contacted by 11, and if not contacted by then, you aren’t?

I don’t think so, but even if it was like that, there will be some people who decide not to take the spot. The admission team will then have to choose people from the remainder of the wait list who were not contacted. There are also some who suddenly pull out of the school in like June…so even after the whole of April there IS still hope for people who were not contacted. Just not much.

CROSSING MY FINGERS SO HARD, SO HARD THEY’RE GOING TO BREAK

Just got today’s email. What do yo guys think?

I think # of non-responsed for admitted students at this point (10am April 10) is greater than any openings they may have.

I’m sorry, what does that mean?

I wonder how many are wait listed for the Icahn scholarship? There are ten every year given to 9th graders who qualify.

Greetings from Choate,

Update as of 10:30 AM on Saturday as promised:

We will not be able to make Waitlist offers today. We are sorry as we know this means we’ll lose great students to other schools who have a firm deadline.

As enrollment settles across all grades there may be additional opportunities to make offers of admission.

We truly appreciate your interest in Choate, we know this is a very challenging process and we thank you for your good will.

Sincerely,

Director of Admission

They shouldn’t have sent out the message yesterday then. Just made things more complicated.

Hey Sadie2, are you sure that there is a wait-list for the Icahn Scholars Program? I thought that everyone who got the scholarship would definitely go to Choate. They get full tuition paid, and many other rewards.

eddytie-

Good question. I honestly don’t know.

:( That’s sad. My dream scenario would be to go to boarding school with something like the Icahn Scholars Program.

Greetings from Choate,

As of Friday April 16th, here’s the waitlist picture -I’ll try to be as specific as possible.

**Day students: **

Our enrollment is full. While still possible, it is unlikely we will go to the Waitlist.

9th Grade Boarding:

Our enrollment is full. While still possible, it is unlikely we will go to the Waitlist.

Upper Forms (10th & 11th grade and PG)

We are currently at our enrollment levels. However, if enrollment shifts take place in the next several weeks an opening could occur. I would classify these occurrences as “less likely” or unpredictable, but they do take place in a typical admission cycle. Enrollment shifts include many variables somewhat unique to boarding schools, and in some cases unique to Choate. For example, a current boarding student may decide to be a day student because their family has moved close to Choate, or a current Choate student may decide to participate in one of Choate’s programs abroad next fall, creating a space.

Essentially, there are many factors that could influence these shifts in enrollment. We don’t want to create false hope, but rather give you enough information to help you plan for next year.

Our Waitlist will remain open until the end of June. This will likely be the last update until then. If you wish to be removed from the Waitlist, please let us know.

Thanks again for your patience throughout the process.

Sincerely,
