Choate

Any comments would be appreciated esp. from students who go there, know people who go there, or have heard about it as a school in general. It is my favourite and I want to know if there are any bad parts or especially good parts about it.

I spent a summer at Choate while in middle school and have several friends who went. To me the biggest negative is how NYC oriented it is. So many NYers, very wealthy and status conscience and a bit of a druggie culture. Pretty heavy on "rules".

Positives: It's close to NY (!), good size (not as big as the biggest but not small), good arts program.

Thanks, suze.

A lot of drugs there? I don't want, like, half the class doing them or anything.

it's the same at everyschool...deerfield used to be beerfield

I know some people who go there and they all absolutely love it...they're all into the performing arts, and Choate is supposed to have one of, if not THE best, performing arts departments out of the top prep schools. If you're really into the performing arts, it's a great school.

And yes, I've also heard that the druggie culture is pretty substantial there.

Are the kids nice there?

IF you are into performing arts, hotchkiss has a gorgeous 80-Million new music and arts center completed last year with 30 sound-proof practice rooms euiped with either upright or grand pianos and a world class music hall with a hand-made fazioli piano (cost 600K)...
Our 2 head of music are two world-class pianist from Brazil who performs at carnegie hall (last year we had busses going to newyork to see them perform)
I dont think we are at the choate level yet but our new facilities are definitely better than theirs..it's a committment to performing arts...we expect this department to burgeon over the next few years.. `

I'm not applying to Hotchkiss, but my friend is.

I've got 3 cousins who have graduated from hotchkiss, they all loved it so I'm applying next year

wait u r from hong kong....who are your cousins?? i probably know them

That's cool. What did you like about Hotchkiss?
I thought it was sort of isolated.

what kind of area surrounds Choate?

All of the Connecticut schools tend to be New York oriented. Hotchkiss and Taft probably more so than Choate.

You'll find drugs and alcohol at any top boarding school and Choate has not had any sort of scandal in recent years which cannot be said for some other schools.

Another positive about Choate is in a much bigger town and is just fifteen minutes away from New Haven.

that's no way in hell true. choate is known to be NYC oriented..hotchkiss is more remote, taft is next to waterbury which is a city....

Just because Hotchkiss is in a remote location does not that many New Yorkers are not familiar with it. Quite a few New Yorkers have country homes in the Hotchkiss area. I live in Manhattan and have tons of friends who attend Hotchkiss and Taft. I was the first student in my school in the last 5 years to attend Choate while we normally send about 4 kids a year to Hotchkiss and Taft. I will admit, however, that since I matriculated at Choate, about four other graduates have followed me.

By the way, I was really torn between Hotchkiss and Choate but selected Choate because of the crew program which, as you know, Hotchkiss for some strange reason does not have. Why don't we agree that both Choate and Hotchkiss are great schools with a significant New York influence, which, by the way, I think is a good thing. Everyone knows that Manhattan kids are smart and sophisticated.

The reason Hotchkiss and Choate have a big NY influence, is because of the convenient and relatively close location these two schools offer to them. Thats all. I bet anybody living close to these two magnificient schools, and have the means, and/or qualify to attend would seriously consider them.

"Everyone knows that Manhattan kids are smart and sophisticated" ... that is some statement.

I know more than my share of "Manhattanites" that don't fit that description ...

I lived in Manhattan until I was seven, but I currently live in Florida.
I'm PMing you some questions CT. :)

bump........

Wow, Francis, you're bumping up a board that's just over six months old. ;) But it reminds me, I wonder if CT is still on.

hey i'm going to hotchkiss and even though i live in north carolina i was born in nyc so does that make me "smart and sophisticated"?
