I was admitted to the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance. The buildings are located in North campus (i believe). However, could I choose to live in a dorm on the Central campus and commute to North, or am I forced to live in North campus due to my major?

I don’t know the answer for sure, but I remember in a tour the tour guide said a lot of engineering students live on central campus and “commute.” I doubt the performing arts would be different, although I don’t know for sure.

I know people in music and they all live on North. The Bursley area of residence halls is really close to the music school (maybe 300 yards max), and it would be a lot easier to move your instrument, etc. around campus if you live on North. Plus you’ll be living with others who have your same major. You can always take a ten minute bus ride to Central and the bus system is very reliable.

the bus system sucks on weekends, and that’s an understatement

OP - Where you’ll want to be will depend on what instrument you play, how frequently or late you want to access practice rooms, and what kind of lifestyle you like. HOWEVER, you don’t actually get to choose, although you can state your “preference” and hope it works out. Doesn’t mean you get placed there. We know students quite happy on north…nice woodsy setting, convenient for music, etc. Others prefer central. The way to get placed on central or hill campus is to apply to a suitable michigan learning community that is housed in a particular resident. To apply, you fill out that part on your housing application, and then if accepted to the “community” you will be placed in the associated residence hall. Cruise the housing site by clicking the link in your WA to read more about this option.
BTW, what is your instrument? My s. will be attending school of music, but is hoping to be accepted in the Lloyd Hall Scholars program (on the hill, between central and north) to take advantage of the creative writing classes it offers and the artsy community.

Good luck.
Cheers,
K

I was always inform most engineering students live on north campus.

But think about how much time you need to practice. For upper-level students, it makes very good sense to spend a lot of time in the music school and live close (there are about 3-4 apartment complexes that are within walking distance) when you’re focusing on the major. Look at your courseload for the freshman year- if it’s a lot of distribution requirements with a class on NoCa, you may be better off having a year on Central Campus just for the experience. I am currently living off-campus in NoCa with a roommate in music and I have my classes on CC. From my sense, CC does have a lot of things going on (obviously) so it depends on what you want to do on weekends. Seriously, transportation sucks on weekends with the Michigan bus running every 20 minutes as opposed to 10 during the week.

I would advise staying on north campus. As a music, theatre, arts student you probably need to practice a lot and there aren’t many places in central to practice. Engineering students can stay at central because some of their classes are in central and they don’t need to “practice” at certain locations. Plus, most of those in the school of music stay on north campus so its a good place to be with your peers.
