Choice of CTY Summer Courses

I heard that "Introduction to the Biomedical Sciences" is more popular than "Law and Politics in US History" in terms of the number of applicants. Anybody know which of the CTY summer courses are most sought after?

Hi, I’m a returning student, and I would like to take either Introduction to Biomedical Sciences or Fast Paced High School Biology, too. My main interest is to study biology but I don’t know whether I should take the intro class or skip right to a challenging fastpaced course. It may be very helpful for high school but CTY has been a really fun social experience. I remember the fast paced high school science courses made you take a pretest on the first day which scares me. Which would you recommend?? And i hope there is at least some girls in the fast paced biology course if I do select that one.

AHAHA, I’m sorry if that was not related to the thread xD

Intro to Biomed is for 7th and maybe 8th graders only, and is recommended before the fast paced science courses. Because there are no prerequisites the basic courses fill up quickly throughout CTY. My D took Intro to Biomed at Lancaster Session 2 last year and loved it, it helped with AP Bio she is taking now in 8th grade. She said the fast paced Bio people had a lot of work (not a bad thing). The is taking fast paced Physics this coming summer. Much info is on the CTY website on how to pick courses and their prereqs, and see the RealCTY wiki for student rating of sites and courses.

To HKparent: I went to CTY for 4 years. The classes that are most popular depend on site as much as content. If you go to Carlisle, the science classes are likely to be less popular than humanities and at Lancaster the science and math classes are the hardest to get into.
To coolcookies: Since they usually make multiple sections for each of the fast-paced high school classes, it is very likely that you’ll get into it. I don’t know very much about Intro to Biomed, but I don’t think it’s quite as in depth as Biology. I took Fast-Paced Biology during my second year and the group of people was different from the people in my classes during other years, but I learned a lot and enjoyed the class and thought that the social aspect was great. The social parts of CTY are fun no matter what class you’re in. The pre and post tests aren’t that scary and a lot of classes have them even though they’re not required like they are for the high school classes. I took it at a site that doesn’t exist anymore, so I don’t know what it’s like at other sites, but since it’s a pretty standard course I’m sure it’s good everywhere.
To both: I would definitely suggest going to realcty.org to look at what people have written about that and postctydepression.com to ask people who have more information on the two specific classes than me. I promise that the people there are very friendly.

Thanks, FeatheredBoa. My girl eventually decided to do International Politics and the choice of courses is no longer a problem. Meanwhile, she is looking for online courses on writing. Any suggestion?

I did CTY for 3 summers and am currently doing my third online class through them. I know this is late and probably no longer useful but I took Introduction to the Biomedical Sciences at JHU after 7th grade. I loved the class and I assume they accept everyone because they had 2 classes for it. By everyone I mean you still have to get into CTY but other than that I think it is first come first serve. The only class I had a problem with was robotics because they only had a certain number of the expensive kits and it would be harder to make more classes. That said if you apply early you should get in.

In regards to online classes, I took Crafting the Essay during 8th grade. It was challenging because it was open to many older students who were use to writing essays every week. That said I would still do it again as it was a great class. It is also the prerequisite for many other online CTY writing classes.

I know EPGY also offers online writing classes and have heard they are good.

I went to realcty.org, but couldn’t find people’s comments about different CTY programs. Can someone let me know where I can find those?
