Looking for Colleges for S who wants to be Music Ed/Choral Conducting Major. We have looked at St. Olaf...he loved it! Where else should we look..can we get in?? He is a VERY GOOD Baritone.... a Conseratory may be to high of level for his ability. (3.75 unweighted, 4 APs, 1 HRs, SAT 1900, first test),3 years of Voice lessons and every Music class offered. Need help ....I have read most of the posts and know the top rated options....what is the next level of options?

Plenty of options for a good baritone. Where, what size, etc is he looking for.

We have been looking at LAC and smaller Universities…such as St.Olaf (3,000). University fo Denver, Chapman, Lawerance…but all seem to be Conservatories. S wants Choir/ Mus Ed verus Voice Perfromance.

Check out Luther College in northern Iowa, along the MN and WI borders. Pretty area, small campus, GREAT choirs and strong music ed program. They’ve got a good math program as well.

Westminster may be viewed as a conservatory, but it is a good university too. (Rider) That has a great choral program, as well as music education. That would be my number one rec, even though it’s a bit farther away than what you’re looking at.

In which state do you live? Most states have a good music education program at least one of the state universities, by far your most cost-effective choice. Frequently good singers who are eager to do choir qualify for service awards which provide tuition benefits.

We are in the NW…S wants to go away for college. S is a JR. so trying to get a list with some reaches and safety’s based on how auditions go. Luther was recommended by one of his teacher…Westminister also. Thanks.

Might want to look at James Madison University in VA. Very strong music school, with excellent choirs, opening a new performing arts center in the fall, wonderful music ed. program.
