Choosing a college at UCSC

I mean... she... 0.o

ouch. yeah she.
anyway, no im not. heres a link for all the themed halls.
its quite beautiful :)
http://housing.ucsc.edu/housing-themes.html

and why would you want a substance free dorm??????
even if you dont plan on partying, you might want to later.

Oh yeah, I see what you mean...
But, as for the second part, I really want to avoid that kind of stuff.

But... what is a substance free room anyway... I mean, isn't that stuff illegal anyway? Why would they even need a substance free room. lol
I mean, I know it's going to happen even if it's illegal, but what would stop it from happening in these rooms anyway?

Thank you so much bananaslug :) I never found that before.

Well I would just prefer my floor was fairly regular, and If I wanted to party, I could go to another dorm/college. I want my immediate environment to be fairly quiet and normal.

I do wonder though, do people who are on substance free floors really stay away from substances? Are these floors what you would consider the "Quiet study floors?"

Also, does anyone have any experience with the "intensive study floors." Is that just for people who have no life and just study? I mean UCSC, is supposed to be laid back...

the substance free dorms basically just set extreme rules that your expected to follow. you cant use drugs/alcohol, you cant allow anyone into your dorm who uses drugs/alcohol, and if you are under the influence of anything, you cant be in your dorm. if you violate these rules, they pretty much kick your ass out on the streets. i think its just meant for people who are sober (as in AA sober) or people who are just crazy against drugs.

and i dont know anything about quiet or intensive study dorms, sorry

I'm thinking Cowell will be the best for me. :] I'm just worried about having small room with a roommate. Or having a scary, creepy roommate. :[ I can't wait to visit!

I just accepted!
my list was 1. stevenson 2. porter 3. cowell 4. crown 5. college 10

did anyone else put stevenson for their top?

What are stevenson ppl like?

I have no idea, but someone said theyre jewish.

i took that to mean that theyre nice? I dont know! hahah what an odd stereotype.

my friend said that all of them are nice except that porter is a little hippie, which i can totally handle.

so what is stev. like?

i heard they want your money

Everyone keeps saying that Porter is hippie full and whatnot, but what exactly is the modern hippie? Cause when I think hippie I'm thinking you know the old fashion hippie, witht the bandanna and the tie-dye shirts and all that stuff?

I heard that in Stephenson, they keep unlimited bagels and cream cheese in the lounge room...

Banana - did you have any other reasons for choosing Stevenson? Was it close to your classes?

I like Merrill the best because it has alot of the amenities that I want such as music practice rooms. It is also in the main part of the campus and fairly close to everything.

I also liked Kresge because I thought it looked cool. Any thoughts? My top picks so far are Merrill, Porter, Stevenson. BTW, what floor did you choose at Stevenson? Are the dorms first come first serve? Thanks!

i chose stevenson because i like their motto/core course and plus, its closer to my classes which be mostly social science based.

Kresge is apartments only i thought...ridiculous. i have no idea what im talking about now.

I have no idea what floor im on. Im pcking a coed place though. for sure.

I was thinking about Porter, and got all the up to paying in my SIR when I started second guessing myself. I'm a pretty relaxed guy and I'm all for meeting people, listening to music, talking, drinking to coffee. But when it comes to massive parties, and drugs, it really isn't my scene. Is this just some over exaggeration that Porter has a lot of drugs in it? I think every college has a pretty good population of students that are constantly baked, is Porter that bad? If it really is....then I guess I'll go with 8, or Crown. Maybe Stevenson? AGH, frustration. haha

Any suggestions?

Yeah Greg, that's basically exactly what I want to know too...

so.. this is what my friend who is currently at UCSC said:

athletes live at stevenson
nerds live at crown
*****es live at 8
gangsters live at oakes
art/hippies live at porter
hipsters live at 9 & 10
hippies that dont wear shoes (some) live at kresge
merrill is like the hispanic college

my friend lives at crown and she says not to live there b/c it's really crappy. lol.

woahh, i thought college 9/10 were full of asians.. but youre saying hippies? somebody could you please clear that up for us, hehe?

not hippies, hipsters. lol
yeah a lot of asians live there, and she says its like high school. i donno
