Choosing a college at UCSC

So, as it ends up, I'm in Stevenson.
That was my third choice.
I guess that's cool.

I ended up at College 9, first choice! ^_^
Best dining hall ftw.

Porter College!!

very pleased...very pleased indeed. and I already started my housing app...I dont know what to say when they ask you to elaborate on yourself.
I just told them my music and political interests.

How did you find out what college?

go to housing.ucsc.edu and click on the square button that says "Apply For Housing" and sign in with your ID and birthday. then, click "Apply for Fall 08" and there yah go!

yeah 9!!!!!!!

hey guys i started researching ucsc & i completely fell in love with it. but i don't know what college i should be looking into. basically im white & blonde but definately not the *****y type or the abercrombie & hollister type either. i'm a pretty big partier so i guess i would want to go where the party is lol but i also want to be able to get things done when i need to. any suggestions?

If you're a stoner whose definition of fun is getting drunk, getting high, and partying, Kresge is a pretty good place for that...if you're not the type who likes to screw around, on the other hand, stay the hell away from Kresge.

on our way home from san francisco my buddy and i stopped by santa cruz and decided to check the campus out.
after walking around the campus for a few minutes or so, i fell in love with it!!
i'm a psych or english (i dont know which yet) major and i'm wondering what colleges are best for me.
i want to be around people who are also majoring in psych oe eng so we can study together.
what do you guys think??

Do you think you could give me the college(s) or floor(s) OF colleges that embodies OR LEAST embodies each of these statements?

(Do all colleges have the same themes of floors?)

Please, if you can, specify floor of house. If you only know the answer to one of these, can you indicate the number?

This college/floor has the most surfers.

This college/floor has drinking but not pot or other drugs.

This college has the smorgashboard of drugs.

This college has the most serious, motivated, hard-working students.

This college has the most athletes, and people in it like to socialize through sports.

This college has nutritious, healthy food.

This college is the most socially liberal.

This college is the most socially conservative.

This college has a lot of religious students of traditional faiths.

This college has the strongest LGBT scene.

This college has quite a few type-A, take charge leaders who everyone says are going to change the world.

This college is most school or college spirited.

In this college, playing video games is a popular pasttime.

In this college, social interaction takes precedent over computer time.

It’s hard to be lonely at this college.

It’s easy to escape and be alone at this college.

There’s always a million things going on at this college.

There are a lot of opinionated students at this college.

The funniest/most comical people I know go to this college.

At this college, people tend to be really compeditive, or into GPA.

This college is most like high school-at least it feels that way.

This college may be somewhat diverse, but the minorities are really cliquey.

At this college, people don’t even seem to notice if they are a minority or not.

This college is meant for the renaissance student who enjoys all types of subjects.

This college is the most pretentious.

People are most likely to have a late night philosophical discussion at this college.

This college is the most polarized between opinions and people.

This college is by nature and near running trails.

This college has a big dating/couples scene.

A lot of people are in frats/sororities at this college.

Maybe this will help other people trying to consider colleges at UCSC.

Each college has different themes available. Sometimes they are just for a floor, sometimes they are for the whole house.

Also, these questions are ridiculous. Each college attracts many kinds of people. What kind of people are on which floor changes every year. In most cases there is no clear winner. And to say that most people of type ____ go to ____ college is insulting. Things are NOT that clear-cut in most cases.

You’re unlikely to find this. Ever. There are floors that are drug AND alcohol free, but not one or the other.

Crown. It attracts the academic crowd.

Probably Cowell or Stevenson, as they are close to the gym.

All the colleges!

Porter. Hello, Lavender Lounge!

It’s most obvious at Crown.

I’m probably going to UCSC in the fall.
I want to know which college is the best for what I am looking for.
Some feedback would be really helpful.

I like to party.
I like to make friends.
I’m not too outgoing, but I can chill with anyone.
I don’t want to be in a college that’s too secluded from everyone/everything else.
I like writing and music, but I’m not very artistic.

I’m having a hard time deciding between Porter and Kresge.
Kresge seems great. The whole apartment aspect sounds cool, but I read one student’s opinion and she said she loved it because she’s not into partying, so it was perfect for her…
I love partying and I would want that to be an important aspect of my social life.
Is Porter better for that? Would it be more fun?

Ahh, help!

There are not a whole lot of parties on campus in general because of the lack of Greek life. Living next to Porter, you’re sure to have friends there. You’ll hear about (or actually hear…) the parties that do go on.

You sound like the perfect fit for Kresge.

but do you think it would be better to get the whole dorm experience?
by all the things i’ve read on these threads, porter and kresge seem very similar.
i like them equally the same, but now it comes down to choosing between dorms and apartments. which would you recommend for an incoming freshman?

You could always get apartments next year.

hey I had a few questions:

Can someone describe the different colleges to me, in terms of what type of person would best fit into each college?

Are there any public pools? I’m a certified lifeguard/Swim Instructor and I want to know if there’s a chance i could get a job nearby.

If you bothered to read the topic you just posted in, you’d mostly likely have a good idea.

Sorry, I don’t know anything about public pools.

I am applying to ucsc later in the autumn. any one know what type of house would be right for me, i love to party and socialize. my sport was track but i converted to be a bodybuilding after a knee op. dont want to go into any house which is over well… academic. but i do work hard when needed

Hi i am currently going to be a freshman at UC Santa Cruz next year and i was wondering if anyone can tell me which college would be the best for me. I have narrowed down my choices to College 9, 10, Cowell, and Stevenson. I like Cowell and Stevenson becuase it is right next to the gym and i heard that people at Cowell/Stevenson are pretty chill. I also like College 9, 10 because they have the newest rooms and the dining hall is open to late opposed to Cowell and Stevenson.

Also:
I am Korean, am somewhat social and want to meet new people who are pretty nice. Also, i was wondering which dining hall is closest to the social science building.

Okay, just so everyone knows:
PORTER has the newest rooms. They just finished re-modeling the buildings last year. They basically built 2 whole new buildings and just used a skeleton of the old buildings. They are as new as they can get.
But anyway–C9/10 dining hall is closest to the social sciences.
