Choosing a college at UCSD... Help!

So I am filling out the TAG for UCSD right now and am unsure about how to order my preference of colleges.

I will be applying as a Biochem/Molecular Bio major so I figured I would put Revelle as number 1. After looking at the requirements I have decided that may not be the best choice for me due to its rigorous requirements such as proficiency in a foreign language. I am meeting the foreign language requirements for transferring because of my 2 years in high school spanish but I do not want to spend time in language classes at UCSD. I would rather focus on taking science courses.

How are fellow science majors ordering their preference of college for UCSD?

I’m a science major who will be applying with IGETC. When I worked it out for me, Muir, Marshall, and Sixth had the easiest requirements at 8 units each. For me personalty, I am putting Revele first, but this is because I am going to take those second language classes at community colleges which will free up units at UCSD. This situation only really applies to me since I am dual majoring and I need to free up as much space as possible to remain in the unit cap, it won’t help others though.

I made the following run-down awhile back. Some of the links are no longer active, but I think this is still a pretty good summary.

These are the requirements for IGETC certified transfers taken from each college’s website:

Warren-3 upper division classes

“Three non-contiguous (unrelated to your major) upper-division courses are required. These courses must be taken at UCSD, must be 4.0 units each, and must be upper-division (courses numbered as 100 or above). They may be taken on a Pass/No Pass basis, and may be contiguous to each other. For transfer students entering before fall 2009, only two courses are required. View Transfer GE Chart for details.”

Academic Requirements

Marshall- 2 upper division classes, one of which must include significant writing (approved list available at http://vac.ucsd.edu)

Follow the link and go to Disciplinary Breadth Course Section. It says 4 courses, but if you go to the bottom it says IGETC students don’t need to take the two lower division ones.

http://marshall.ucsd.edu/pdfs/GE_SHEET.pdf</a></p>

Muir- I have heard two, but I’m not completely sure. Here are some links.

John Muir College :: Celebrating the Independent Spirit
http://muir.ucsd.edu/academics/docum...listfillin.pdf</a></p>

Sixth- 2 courses. One is a practicum course and the other is reflective writing. The practicum seems to be a project course where you do some sort of learning through community service project.

“If you transferred through the Transfer Preparation Programs (TAG Completed or IGETC Certified Program), you must take the upper-division Practicum course/ project and CAT 125”

GE Requirements - Transfer Students
Sixth College Practicum

Eleanor Roosevelt- 3 Making of the Modern World courses. That is all. Transfers usually take three of the following: MMW 1 (no writing required), MMW 4 or 4T (4T is for transfers only), MMW 5, and MMW 6. You have to take them in sequence, so either 1,4,5 or 4,5,6. 4-6 require 10 page papers at the end of the courses. As well as pre-writing every few weeks.

"IGETC Certified or IGETC partial (either are noted on Academic History)

Complete any three MMW courses (all other GE courses will be waived)

Earn a minimum of 180 units (60 of which must be upper division) with a minimum UC GPA of 2.00"

General Education
Courses

Revelle- 8 courses on top of IGETC (3 calculus, 2 science, and 3 foreign language) It may be less depending upon what classes you have already taken.

"Calculus Requirement: IGETC requires one semester of math. Revelle requires 2 semesters (or 3 quarters) of calculus. "
“Science Requirement: IGETC requires two semesters (or 3 quarters) of science. Revelle requires a minimum of five quarters specifically in chemistry, physics and biology”
“Language Proficiency Requirement: Revelle requires a 3rd semester or 4th quarter of college level language to meet this requirement”

IGETC Plus

Should I choose Revelle as my number 1 choice since I am a science major? Will it be a superior experience for me over the other colleges?

Right now:
Muir>Revelle>Warren>Marshall>Roosevelt>Sixth

Thanks UCHopeful for all that information. So the 2 years of foreign language that I took in high school won’t count for the foreign language requirement at Revelle even though it counts for the IGETC right? I am willing to put Revelle first and learn a foreign language but should I? Will going to Revelle and being among other science students be more beneficial to me than going to Muir?

I transferred out of ERC into Revelle because I want to learn a new language. Also, there are many ways to satisfy the Foreign Language requirement for Revelle.

If you took it in high school then you may be able to test into a higher level. If you test into the 3rd quarter, then you only have to take 2 more quarters.

when i got warren and didn’t go people kept asking me to switch with them

so warren 1st choice imo

For science or engineering majors:

 1. Warren
 2. Muir
 3. Thurgood / Sixth
 4. Thurgood / Sixth
 5. Revelle
 6. ERC
