Choosing a college with good environmental science/studies programme

Hi everyone! This is my first posting here. Thanks in advance for everyone for reading and answering my questions!

I am a Chinese student currently studying in Singapore and am really keen in pursuing a career in the environmental sector, though I am not certain whether I would like to go into the science side or the social side yet. This is why I’d prefer to have a college that is both good at environmental science and environmental studies. I’d also hope to take on psychology as it is a subject that has always been close to my heart.

Both a RI and a LAC are fine with me. But as I will really have to rely on financial aid, I am ruling out state schools. So unfortunately I cannot apply to the California schools. As it happens that the most selective private schools have more resources, I will hope to apply to one of them. Out of the private schools, the research I have done suggested that Yale, Duke, and Cornell are among the strongest in their environment programmes. I really like Yale because its strong humanity programme and generosity with aid. It is need blind even for foreign students. But it is also the most selective in the three. Cornell and Duke seem equally strong in their environment programmes but I guess I’d still like Yale better for its urban setting.

I would really appreciate if you can share with me more on the school culture of each of these schools, the strength and niche areas for each of them, as well as any information that you find relevant. Recommendation of other schools is also much welcomed!

For more information on me, I got 2280 for my SAT and in my opinion am doing well in my high school. I am also the president of my school’s green organization and try my best to volunteer actively and participate in events outside of the school. What are my chances in your opinions?

Loads of thanks for reading this on a Monday!

Not an expert on the chances/school personality thing, but I do know a bit about Duke’s program. You can pick a concentration between marine ecosystems, toxicology, hydrology and chemical cycling, or climate change(there’s more, but those are the ones for a BS in EnviSci). It’s very science heavy. There’s a lot of research going on (It’s in the research triangle of North Carolina) and they have a ton of eco-friendly infrastructure all around campus including a green building with renewable energy and sustainable gardens. It’s an awesome program, especially being in North Carolina (coastal state, easy ocean access for marine studies). I don’t know anything about the others, sorry. Just obsessed with Duke. :)
