Except most students on here don’t require that much power. The only majors who do require them are chem, physics, and digital art people.

This is exactly what I was going to say. The OP’s bias for laptops is pretty clear, for one he doesn’t even mention price anywhere. And to say desktops are “old” and laptops have “just about the same if not more power” is just laughable, because you’d have to pay 3x the price of the desktop for that to be the case. And at that price point, you may as well buy both a desktop and laptop which would still be cheaper than a single “powerful” laptop.

Why the gerbils is this even stickied?
Not only is this thread more than 4 years old about a topic that changes and improves rapidly, the OP clearly has bias/ doesn’t know what he is talking about. OP is filled with misinformation and opinions.

But… it’s not stickied. It just got bumped and thus revamped from the dead.

I assumed “featured discussions” meant sticked

Nope, it’s sticked if there’s a “pin” on the right side of the post

Since most colleges offer extensive wireless capability and laptops are portable, I would have assumed they would be the PC of choice. S is going off to college in a few days with a laptop he has had for a few years (HP). Will it be adequate? When it needs to be replaced, what do most of you prefer?

The usable lifespan of a laptop is about 6 years total. So as long as your son’s laptop is < 2 years old, it should theoretically survive 4 years of college. If you need to upgrade in the future for more power, you can always cross that bridge when you come to it.

Source: My laptop is now 4 years old and I still use it. My bro graduated 2 years ago and he still uses his. We both have desktops for gaming though, so the laptops are more for mobile work.

I have a asus

I don’t know if anyone mentioned this yet- but I know that if you can prove that you’re going to college within the next six months or something like that Apple will give you a nice discount on a new laptop.
