Choosing a Dorm for Fall 2013

Can anyone provide advice on dorms at RPI? My son was just accepted ED and will need to choose quickly. Something with A/C would be good. Thanks!

If I remember correctly, you will not actually enter your dorm preferences for a while.

The date of your deposit will determine your housing assignment, though.

I current room in Barton, and it is an awesome dorm!!
A good second is Quad which has suitesm then Bar-H, then the other dorms are similar.

Housing is done based on when the DEPOSIT is received. So as long as you send in the deposit now, your son will still get basically first priority in housing selection if the housing forms are send later in the spring.

I highly recommend, if possible for your family, to visit RPI sometime before you send in the housing and take a look at all the dorms.

But I do live in Barton and do think it is the nicest dorm :slight_smile: however I know people in other freshman dorms that are plenty happy there.

Thanks all for the advice. My son stayed in Cary for a week in the summer and it was too hot! But it was summer…We’ll get over there again to review the options and get our deposit in soon!

I liked Quad a lot when I lived there. I think it’s probably the best dorm-style residence on campus.

Barton was nice too (back when it was all doubles… I’m not sure I could recommend it now), but I disliked the lack of available study rooms (there are like 4 or 5 in the building, oftentimes occupied by students not necessarily studying… quad is close enough to the academic buildings that there will always be a free room with huge chalkboards/whiteboards nearby).

nhmom2, was your son in the Chemistry&Medicine/Architecture program this summer by any chance? Just curious.

I was there as well and you’re absolutely right about the climate conditions…it was extremely sweltering in there; out of some luck, my roommate happened to bring a portable air conditioner with him so that solved one problem.

I’m also going to RPI and I’ve heard that Barton is well equipped with A/C but is mainly triples…is that so?

rootkit, my son attended the first week of the aerospace engineering program in late July. It was hot all over the country and my son really likes cold weather. That’s why he doesn’t mind RPI’s weather at all.

@rootkit

Yes. Correct on both counts.

Here’s a page giving a quick overview of your options: http://www.rpi.edu/admission/guide/residence.html</a> . More details are included in the enclosed links.

Sometimes I wonder how the housing assignment really works. My D didn’t send hers in until just before due date - well she got her 10th choice - which was Barton. She is totally thrilled with it. Triple room she is in is quite spacious - she has no problem getting a study room but she does complain that there is no stove in the building.
