Hi, everyone.
I will transfer out in 2010, so I'll have enough time to finish the lower division courses for more than one major. But I haven't decided the combination yet since I don't know whether it'll be better for me to do two majors that are related to each other (such as Business Administration B.S. and Economics B.A.) or two majors that are significantly different (such as Business Administration B.S. and Computer Science B.A.). Personally, I prefer to do the latter because I think having a wide variety of knowledge will make it easier for me to prosper in my future career. Meanwhile, a solid understanding of different fields is more likely to enhance my ability to handle difficult situations.
However, doing two majors radically different from each other require much more work than it would be in the case of two related majors(One of my friends says Haas students have a average GPA of 2.5 this year; CS majors students in UCB also suffering extremely competitive situations). Also, I've heard that UCB has a policy that force its transfer students to graduate once they have finished 150 semester units including the lower division units. Is 150 enough for me to finish the upper division courses required by both majors?

Number one hope that you can get into Haas in the first place. Second you would really need to talk to a counselor at Berkeley to figure this out. The two things you need to worry about as a double major is the unit cap, in the college of letters and sciences it is 136 units I don't know about the other colleges. You also need to to get your request for the double major approved and it might be a little more tricky because you are going in between two different colleges. If you are trying to complete prerequisites for two different majors at your CC then make sure you can handle the course load and that it won't negatively affect your GPA because Haas is very competitive.

Yes, I realize that Haas is tough and extremely comptetitive to get into, and I'm trying to maintain a high GPA and involve in as many extra curriculums as possible.

So I also need to request approvals issued by the admission offices of both colleges which I'm intend to attend, is that right? It does sound tricky to do double major between two different colleges. You're right, I probably need to talk to a counselor in UCB.

Don't get me wrong it is possible. But it is not actually called double majoring if you are double majoring outside of one college, it is actually called simultaneous degrees. Here is a link that you might find somewhat useful. Double Major & Simultaneous Degrees

CS is actually offered in L&S. EECS is offered in COE.

Computer Science - Two Ways | EECS at UC Berkeley

By the way, CS has a lot of pre-reqs that are not offered at community colleges. Plan well, it's doable.

Thanks a lot, Thedude44. :D

Do you know anyone who is doing simultaneous degrees in UCB? Will it reduce my chance of admission?

Yes, that's right. Many courses such as COMPSCI 61C,COMPSCI 70,EL ENG 42 have no articulated course in CCs, so I'll need to take it after I transfer out. Besides, they also have a unit cap saying that students need to graduate once they reach the number, which makes me mad.

You don't need to put you want to do a simultaneous degree on your app, so no it won't negatively affect your admission. just pick either of the 2 majors to put as your applied major.

I heard many students in Haas plan to get a simultaneous degree on Economics, which is provided in L&S college. Is the procedure similar to a CS simultaneous degree?

How long does it usually take to gradute with two simultaneous majors?
