Choosing a Major (Advice for prospective class of 2019)?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on what school in Rice to apply to. It’s my first choice, I’ll most likely be applying ED, and I would really like to go into bioengineering. However, I know bioengineering and engineering in general is probably a more competitive school and major. Grades and test scores wise, I think I’m definitely stronger in the humanities and I do enjoy them (got a 3 in AP Chem, B in the class and B first semester Calc BC + 4 on AP exam). Would it be advisable to apply to the school of Social Sciences instead and then if I change my mind try to change majors into engineering? Thanks so much for any advice.

I would focus more on what area you feel you can best convey passion and interest in than what you perceive your stats to be better in. Stats are compared in admissions because that’s just how the world works, but be wary of becoming too wary of them or you’ll fall into the trap of just listing all your accomplishments

That being said, no matter what you choose, switching should be easy even before freshman classes start. I don’t know why Rice does admissions this way, since people don’t actually declare their majors for like a year or more on average and I don’t think it technically affects what classes you can get into either. I think it’s more of a mechanism to gauge interest.

i agree–apply to whichever area you think your application demonstrates more strength in. many students switch majors upon entering college, so you can simply change your major if you end up enrolling.
