Hello,
My daughter is currently a senior in high school and is struggling on deciding what to major in. My two older daughters were both biology majors and my husband strongly encourages my youngest daughter to major in biology but she is unsure if she is capable of handling the workload. She did not take trig, calculus, AP bio, or chemistry in high school. Is it still possible for her to major in biology? or is she better off majoring in something else?
I think it may depend on the college. My DD did AP Bio but not AP Chem. She tried to major in Chem at a large university but it was too much for her (she did very well in HS Chem). At a small school, she might have been ok with more personal attention as a Chem major. The real question is what does she want to study? And can she go in undeclared, so she can figure it out.
She was thinking about maybe studying something in the business field but I feel like because her father wants her to study bio, she feels like she has to or she would be letting him down. She doesn’t hate science but she feels she would be way too behind because she didn’t take any of those classes in high school. The two schools she is considering are both small as well, should she try bio then and change if it’s too much?
Look into the schools’ policy for changing. It is easier to change at some schools than others. Also some schools prefer you don’t declare until after the gen eds are done
