For the first time ever, I'm having doubts about what I want to major in. I'd always wanted to get my bachelors in political science and then go for law school, but for the past month, I've been reading about the impacted state of the law firm business and the large debts you go into going to law school. So I looked over the available majors and tried to see if I had any alternatives that would fit me better. I've narrowed it down to Computer Science and Media Studies (Communications).

I looked over the pre-reqs and came down to the conclusion that it would be better if I applied Comp Sci for UC Berkeley and Communications for UCLA. Computer Science at UCLA doesn't use IGETC and has a vast list of pre-reqs while UC Berkeley has only 2 (Only the calculus pre-reqs are available at my CCC. I'd also do the recommended JAVA, C++ courses that aren't approved.)

It seems Communications combines econ and the social sciences which tailor to my interest. I know it's impacted, but there doesn't seem to be any better options that match what I want to do.

The Computer Science job sector is pretty open and it keeps my law school option open as I could still practice patent law which is the better field to specialize in.
With Communications, I think I could go to business school, if necessary.

So what do you think College Confidential? I'm already pretty decided on how I'm going to apply come Fall '11, but I want to know what you think about the getting everything done on time. There doesn't seem to be much, but I could be wrong. I haven't yet gotten my 2-year course plan done yet.

Just stick to your original plan. I don’t think communications is going to you any better than a poli sci major. Computer Science on the other hand would be a great back up but it might also harm your GPA and rule out law school as an option.

There are other majors that is not poli sci but pre-law ish are these if you didn’t consider:
University of California, Irvine
Criminology, Law and Society B.A.
University of California, Santa Barbara
Law and Society B.A
University of California, Berkeley
Legal Studies B.A.

Honestly if you want a back-up. I recommend accounting. Just do your original plan and take accounting classes on the side (or minor). Then if anything goes wrong and you decide not to go to law school anymore just take the CPA and head into the business route. Then MBA or MS Accounting in the future.

Communications and Computer Science take me away from Law school. That’s one of the main reasons I’m reconsidering Political Science. Law school just doesn’t seem viable anymore.

Communications would take me to the marketing business and I could potentially go to grad school with that.
Computer Science is a profession on it’s own and grad school would also be an option. At that point, I could also go into Patent Law like I mentioned.

I’m not really looking for a backup as much as I’m looking for a potential future with my degree. Comp Sci at UCLA isn’t feasible, but Comp Sci at Berkeley is. But then I also want to apply to UCLA in-case Berkeley doesn’t work out. Communications was the only major I saw interest in.

This is all weird for me atm. I’ve never had doubts before, but now that I do, I’m making my decision on the basis that life is short. I figure I want to pursue something that’ll be fulfilling and having a successful job at either careers. And to be honest, I don’t know how good I’ll be at either majors, but I’m taking a leap of faith. I honestly don’t know how math intensive Comp Sci is, but I’ve heard it is a lot of theoretical math. I don’t know too much about Communications yet either, but at this point, I see a marketing MBA future ahead.

I don’t think I’m completely ruling out Law school by going either way, but I am opening more opportunities.
