Choosing a NM School for Undecided Major

Won’t have to pay for PhD?

Nope.[ any phd program that requires you to pay them is not worth the $$] you should also expect to receive a stipend from any reputable Phd program. DS is also working on his Phd program and is receiving a generous stipend.

But you do know that a law degree is not the same as a Phd degree, correct?

You DO need to understand that in exchange for NOT paying for your tuition AND for receiving a stipend[ living wage] from the U, you WILL be expected to do research for your advisor for 4-5 yrs, propose, write and defend a thesis paper, in addition to TAing. That is the real reason behind the phrase -“Poor graduate student”- you wont get a real job for considerably longer than if you were to go for a Masters degree[ which you would pay for.]
