Choosing a Private Loan?

Hi, I'm in a bit of a predicament.

The college that I will be attending is not a Title IV institution. This means that I do not qualify for any Title IV educational loans (Stafford, Federal Direct, etc...) or grants (Pell, etc...). So, I have to find a private loan to cover my additional expenses. These include, but are not limited to: deposit, textbooks, and travel.

Should I go to a local bank or credit union and peruse my options? Are there larger lenders that offer a better deal?

All in all I'm rather confused as to how this process is supposed to work.

Thanks.

Really, any advice about how to go about this would be appreciated. I’ve gathered a little information from around the web, but it’s hard to find authentic sources when every other link is trying to sell me on a loan.

I know that there are people on this board who are extraordinarily knowledgeable about this process, I simply do not know who they are. If there is any additional information that I need to provide in order to receive help, let me know and I will do my best to provide.

I’m bumping this up so that perhaps after the Easter weekend someone can offer some advice. His school apparently does not participate in any federally funded programs (Staffords or Pell).

As a curious one…I wonder…how many colleges do not take both Stafford and Pell monies. I’m guessing the number is small but just wondering.

Anyway…parents and others on the Parents Forum have told this student to contact the college in question since THAT college does not participate in Pell and Stafford programs…to see what they suggest students who need additional funds should do.

Any other ideas?

I don’t think you will find may of us to be knowledgeable about financial aid at schools that are not eligible for title IV funds. My first thought is “Why go to a school that is not a title IV?” Have you carefully checked that a degree from there will be useful to you and that classes will transfer to other institutions of need be? I ask because I recall a student previously going to a similar institution and finding that the many thousands of dollars he had spent left him with classes that could not be used when he attempted to go elsewhere.

Just a thought (I don’t know anything about non title IV institutions)

I am confident in the quality of my institution. And just to reiterate what was said in my other thread, I’m receiving what amounts to a full ride (tuition, room & board). So I just need help finding private loans to cover the rest.

How much do you need to come up with? If you get a job now and work until classes start, you should be able to save up enough for your books and personal expenses. A part-time job on or near your campus should be enough to cover anything else that comes up during the school year.

I am confident in the quality of my institution

I don’t think the questioning comment was whether or not the institution met certain marks of quality (which can be subjective or objectively measured) but more the question of “if you were to not finish the program, would the credits transfer to another college?” There are other questions to ask as well, whether or not it is an accredited institution and whether or not that is a criteria that will matter to you later down the road.

However, if all tuition, room and board are covered, what is left is negligible and I would actually advise not to take out any loans. An industrious student can earn 3-5K over a summer and additionally another 3-5K during the school year, which should more than cover books and misc. living expenses.

About 3.5k or so.

I leave for school in two months and I work full-time right now; I’m not sure how likely it is that I’ll find a job that quickly that will work with my limited availability.

Getting a paying job during the school year is not an option due to the nature of my school. I can and will get a job next summer.

The school that I will be attending is accredited and my understanding is that transfers are quite successful in transferring their credits.

Also, I started this thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1134408-i-have-full-ride-but.html</a> in the Parents Forum.
