Choosing a School - Biology Major

Hi there. I know that I really want to study Biology in the future, particularly molecular biology, and go to medical school. I’m a junior right now and I have a 3.9 unweighted GPA and a 2400 SAT. I would like to go to a school that has opportunities for me to do some research (again, preferably related to biology); I have been considering Columbia, Duke, UPenn and Washington University in St. Louis. Could I have some opinions on these schools? Also, what other schools might be a good fit for me?

~Bump~

Is there any reason you’re not applying to all the Ivies? It’s never a guarantee but you seem to have a pretty damn good chance. Also, pretty much all the top universities have great Bio programs so just apply to all of them, MIT, Stanford, all of them!

Yale is the place you wanna’ go.

@dudefromeurope There’s not really a reason I’m not applying to Ivies; the schools I listed were just some schools I had done a bit of research into and would be interested in going to.

Can you tell us more about what type of school you’re looking for? What do you want in terms of size, location, political climate, etc.? Lots of schools have good molecular bio programs and research opportunities.

Are you thinking premed? Wash U is excellent for that. Check out their Moog scholars program (even if you aren’t premed).

@washugrad yes, I would like to go into premed in the future
@lalalemma I’m looking for a college that is medium-large in size; I don’t really have any problems with location, but a big city would be nice  I feel like I’ve been coddled way too much in terms of weather (I am a Californian), so I don’t think I could take anything extreme. I would prefer the political climate to be rather neutral, leaning left.

If you’re from California, schools like Berkeley, USC and UCLA would all offer first-rate education at a very good price.

You could also add Georgetown, Emory, Vanderbilt, Carnegie Mellon, Johns Hopkins, and Stanford to the list.

Though your stats are obviously very good, a lot of these schools are simply a reach for anyone, so you’re going to want to find some lower match schools that you like as well (e.g. Tulane, Drexel, George Washington, Villanova). And of course you’ll want safety schools.

A word about weather and Columbia: I live in Manhattan - 14 blocks away from the Columbia campus to be exact - and for the past 3 months, weather has mostly been in the 20s and 30s with lots of snow. If that sounds too extreme to you, you might want to think twice about New York schools, especially considering there are so many other schools to chose from.

WashU loves high stats, so you’ll have an edge there.

What about Stanford? Great weather and very prestigious. Even with a 2400, though, there’s no guarantee you’ll get in. It is the most selective undergrad school in the US, even more so than Harvard. But you do have better chances than most applicants.
I can’t comment on its Biology/Pre-Med program though.
