Hello all, I plan on getting into web development. There’s no one way to go about doing this, as there are resources for learning for free online, going to university to get a bachelor’s, or getting a certificate. I plan on taking a more structured route, and I’m doing the 3rd option. I’ve read that many employers don’t even care about your education, that they mainly want to see what you can do and they want to look at your portfolio; but I think the education aspect is important for me. There are many certificate programs online that teach and train you in web development, but what I would like to know is, are there any specific reputable schools that certify you in web development that employers like to see on their applicants’ resumes?
Most large schools have the right classes, usually spread out among the computer science, graphic design, and communications departments. Structured tracks are easier to find at tech-specific schools, but I will mention that the University of Hartford has a wonderful web design/development department (“MWDD”). You have to look in between the cracks to find it, but it seems to offer quite a bit of substance.
I don’t know of any specific schools but I do know that anything in Web design, Game design, or Computer Science will validate that education factor.
Search for certificate programs offered by the Continuing Ed/Extension schools of top universities, such as this: http://www.extension.harvard.edu/professional-certificates/web-technologies-certificate
