Choosing a school

Hi!
As it's coming down to the decision date, I'm wondering where exactly I should go. I'm planning on double majoring in Statistics and Computer Science with a minor in Mathematics. I really love to tutor people and like art. My ACT composite score was 32.

Here is a list of schools that I've been accepted to:
1. Carnegie Mellon University (I got into H&SS but waitlisted into the College of Science)
2. Northwestern University
3. University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign)
4. University of Wisconsin (Madison)
5. University of Michigan (Ann Arbor)

Can you help me narrow down my list?

How much are you willing to pay? And are you willing to look at University of Minnesota. If you are out of state, it costs 28k w/ room & board. Don’t rule out this school versus Madison when actually they are at the exact same level now.
I don’t know if you’d receive any significant scholarships at Carnegie or Northwestern and Michigan is 50k!
So I’d narrow it down to Madison or Illinois
look at Minnesota too, you won’t be disappointed. The campus is a lot better than Illinois and matches Madison.

Thanks for the reply! Sorry, I didn’t apply to Minnesota.

Also, for the purposes of this evaluation, I’m just looking at the best school choice independent of cost.

I have to make my decision by May 1, 2011 because I have to start in Fall 2011–I’m a senior.

I also can’t figure out how to add more than 2 tags… How do I do that?

Unless you are exceptional at CS, it will be difficult to double major in statistics and CS at CMU. The CS classes are very hard and there are a lot of talented CS students. You can fit the courses in but you will have to work your tail off and choose your schedule wisely. It’s very easy to get in over your head on the projects. Plus, they won’t let you into the school of CS without a B avg in your CS classes. That being said, the statistics dept there is terrific.

I’d look into Wisconsin then. The only negative about Wisconsin is that you DON’T get admitted into the program until after freshman year going into sophomore year. I don’t know how Illinois works, but it’s a great school. Although if you can get a scholarship (or have one) go to Northwestern. That would be my #1 choice out of these schools.

Those are three good state schools but if money is not an object I’d have to agree that CMU is the one, prepare to work very hard. I’m not a math/science geek so I’d go to Northwestern because of its breadth of excellence but that’s just me.

@ricegal Thanks or the info on the stats department. I did notice that a lot of schools don’t have a good stats dept. I have a quick question, since I was waitlisted for the College of Science, how hard would it be to get in and minor in math? Another problem is that I’ve only thought of adding CS recently, is there going to be a problem due to space limitations?

@impersonations Thanks for your advice. It’s still on my list though I’m leaning towards CMU due to their strong CS and Stats program.

@Southlandguy My sister goes to Northwestern and she’s really happy there (she’s a biomed engineer major)
