As a senior, I've applied to three colleges and I'm having a difficult time choosing a school. I'm going to major in chemical engineering. I've applied to three schools, two of them are major universities, the University Of Michigan Ann Arbor and Georgia Tech, and one smaller one, Kettering University. I'm having trouble deciding whether to stay close to home, U of M, participate in a co op program where I would make significant money, Kettering, or leaving the state, Georgia Tech. I like the idea of a co op program, but I'm not sure about the size of the school, it's smaller than the high school I attend. I've always wanted to go to the local state university and the prestige of a degree from there is excellent. By leaving the state, I feel I would learn a lot about myself living on my own. There are varying reasons for each school and I'm having a tough time deciding.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Two things I’d pass along are: first to ask yourself how much you already know about the career of chemE. What makes you confident the job is a fit for you? Do you understand what the undergrad coursework is like? I say this because nationally about 1/2 of all people that start in engineering drop out. This affects you because if you go to a school with fewer options outside of engineering you might have to xfer instead of just change majors.

Second, since you’ve listed the pros and cons, a further step would be to make a chart where you decide how important each is to you. And make sure you’ve looked at the entire set of options; for example, can’t you do a co-op program at UofM or GT?

1) there’s no rush to choose NOW. :)

2) I think you should apply to more than just 3 schools!

3) what else do you want in a school? There’s a huge difference between UMich and Kettering.

4) Lastly, GT doesn’t give financial aid to out of state students to help with its high out of state costs, so is your family willing to pay the $40k per year for you to go there?

WTH is a Kettering? Don’t go to a school with such little cache when you have Michigan or even G-Tech as options.

It seems informative should do a little research of his own in order to live up to his name.

Now come on Erin’s Dad, there is always your “Ignore List”, which you can use to filter out all the Un-Informatives.
