I am currently faced with 2 internship offers: one (let’s call this internship A) goes for 6 weeks (40 hrs/week), and the other (let’s call this internship B) goes for 12 months (20 hrs/week). Both internships are paid, but internship A has almost double the hourly wage. In internship A, I will be creating websites, building content management systems, developing mobile apps, and etc. In internship B, I will be doing less technical tasks such as help desk support, quality assurance and testing, and file management.
So my question is: which internship will appeal more to colleges? Internship A, which is a more relevant to my intended major (computer science), or internship B, which is much longer but less hands-on?
wow! congrats on your two offers! :0
you’re a still a high schooler right?
Thanks!
Yes, I’m still in high school. Internship A will be during the summer and internship B will be during my senior year. Internship B also requires summer training.
from my perspective, it seems like internship A would be better for you in terms of payment as well as in terms of the tasks entailed–they are hands-on in comparison to the latter internship activities and therefore more impressive from a career perspective, especially since CS directly relates to such activities. meanwhile, internship B may give you a longer work period to note on your resume, but the less technical tasks may not help you as much in developing your CS skills and displaying your proficiency in such areas. furthermore, if you’ve been able to secure these two internships, i don’t doubt that you’ll be able to score, at the very least, one more in the remaining year you have following internship A that could further pad your profile. or another way to look at it is that if you choose to do internship A instead of B, you’ll have more time to focus on your studies or any other responsibilities during senior year. keep those grades up because senioritis is real!!
with that said, i think you apply for college end of junior year/beginning of senior year right? so it would also be nice to have internship A completed and in time to list on your apps! as opposed to the more iffy, incomplete latter option that may stretch beyond the time you submit all your stuff!
that’s just my two cents on the matter though! and now here’s the obligatory “go with your heart,” if anything!
I was leaning toward internship A before posting this question so it’s nice to know that someone else also thinks that it is the better choice. Thanks for your insight!
i have a CS interested in getting internships too! if you don’t mind me asking, what are yours with?
Does your friend live in the Bay Area? Both of these internships are located there.
wow yeah, what a coincidence! he does actually!!
A is better for CS experience. You will not have much time in senior year to work 20 hours/week for B.
@bouncehau5
Internship A is with IGN under its Code Foo program. Internship B is with a random top tech company provided by a program called Genesys Works.

My senior year isn’t very rigorous compared to my sophomore and junior year. My counselor also allows me to have a 5-period day to make time for the internship. Thanks for the advice!
You still need to work 4 hours a day for B. Are you required to work during normal business hours? How realistic is it? How far you have to travel from school to work then to home? After school traffic is terrible in the Bay area.
Can you do Internship B after you complete Internship A? If B is a 12 month gig, they might be flexible with your start date. If they would, you can have your cake and eat it too! If you absolutely had to choose, I’d go with A – more germane to what you are interested in doing, shorter term (you’re gonna be busy enough during your senior year visiting schools, applying, etc., etc.
If you find that you have the time and inclination after finishing Internship A, apply for Internship C (or maybe A can lead to a longer-term gig).
@coolweather
Timing and location will not be an issue. The internship is intended for upcoming high school seniors and the hours are very flexible.
@LoveTheBard
Thanks for your suggestion! Internship B requires summer training that conflicts with internship A, so I am not able do both. I do hope that I will be able to land another internship or have internship A lead to something longer.
@PowerPoint - I have no doubt you will be able to land something if you try, but even if you don’t, you’ll have had a great internship already under your belt and time to enjoy your senior year. Enjoy Internship A!
Thanks! That’s very uplifting!
