Choosing between General and Applied Statistics

I am currently a Junior at my university and have taken several statistics courses recently in order to switch my major to Statistics. However my university offers General Statistics and an Applied Statistics major. I was hoping that someone could give me an insight into the difference between General and Applied Statistics in terms of job opportunities after graduation. I have also been flirting with the idea of minoring in CS and was hoping to get insight on whether it would be better to minor in CS with a General Stats degree or an Applied Stats degree.

What school?

UC Davis

I would think that Applied Statistics would be more directly useful when it comes to finding a job. Maybe something like Biostatistics.

Actually, if it was me, I’d go for Computational Statistics.

The applied stat route really depends on whether or not you have a discipline in social or life science that floats your boat. Biostat was mentioned. It could be a social science like econ or psych. (The catalog actually mentions a second major or a minor in a life or social science.)

Since you mentioned the comp sci minor, here is a second vote for the computational option. And that really is an applied use of statistics.

Thank you both!

A stats major with a CS minor should be in strong demand.
