Choosing between Material Science in Case Western Reserve and Maryland

I would actually start a new thread with the title
More Advantages: Chemistry or Materials Science Engineering?
to get that answer…
Best of luck in the whole decision process!

@XtremePower, I am surprised that you find Case safer than UMD. I have never visited Case, but my H went to Case engineering school for 2 years in the 80’s. He said unlike UMD has a “gated campus”, Case’s buildings are scattered in a “sketchy neighborhood”. He (over 6’) often felt unsafe walking between classes, especially at night for exams. Perhaps the area has improved significantly since he attended.

Another thing to consider is where do you want to work after graduation. Most companies don’t travel far now for college recruitment. Even back then H’s Case roommate (from DC) graduated from Case, got job offers in the midwest, stayed in the midwest whereas H finished engineering school in the east coast, stayed in the DC area.

Thanks to all that took the time and gave me their insights, my S committed yesterday to UCSB pre chem. with the plan to work hard and apply for their 5 year BS-MS materials program. The rigor and strength of their science and specifically chemistry grad program is what made him give up engineering. He is an outgoing and active kid who does engage in a lot of activities/clubs and does not like to drink or use any drugs. He and his girlfriend of 1.5 year usually prefer to hang out at our respective homes and do more quiet activities rather than go to their HS big parties. So understanding from the many college confidential accounts of how much partying goes on in UCSB, he will just have to find the kids that share similar interests. He does have a lot of friends who party. So I think his challenge will be more in balancing activities and studies… Exciting times!
