I play the french horn and am a graduating high school senior. I've narrowed my choices down to Florida State University (virtually free) and Oberlin Conservatory (along with the college for a double degree-- very expensive). Don't let the names get in the way, both schools are great. Any experienced horn players (or their parents) have any input as to where I should go?

My d was recommended to go to a university over a conservatory for undergrad in the event that she change career direction. If you decide that horn performance (an assumption) is not for you, you can still stay at FSU. At Oberlin you might need to transfer. It also depends on which teacher you think suits you best. How many of their former students have won jobs or at least gotten into better schools for grad work? Best of luck, if you’re very motivated, it really doesn’t matter where you go. Time in the practice room, listening, the growth of your rep, and the ability to push through ANY perceived failure whether it be a professor telling you it’s not for you, a nightmare performance, or a failed audition. The people who work in this business are the people who choose to work in this business - it’s actually that simple.

A bit late to inform the OP’s decision, but not for others who follow. Those admitted to the double degree program at Oberlin can drop either degree program and remain in the other with no transfer required. They have already been admitted to both the College and the Conservatory.
