DS was accepted to UCI in his dream major- Mechanical Engineering. He was accepted to his dream school UCSB in his alternate major- Computer Science. He has heard that it is very difficult to move into ME at Santa Barbara. He is working on it, but if he can't change to ME before May 1st, he is really nervous about accepting to SB. He likes Irvine, but LOVES Santa Barbara. He does not want to major in CompSci. What to do?

Is there a way for him to change his major to “undeclared - engineering” at SB?

If he got into UCI as ME, then why not just choose UCI? Will the dream school be worth the chance of not getting into his dream major and studying something he doesn’t want to major in?

If I remember correctly, there isn’t even much a difference between the strengths of the programs at both universities. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

under grad is 4 years, He will work the next 50 years with his degree. Which one is more important?

I also got accepted as Mechanical Engineering @ UCI and waitlisted at UCSB. But, I am considenring UCI because you can get dual major as Mechanical Engineering & Aerospace Engineering by just taking two more class. So, I think it is a wise idea to choose UCI.
