Hi, I'm a incoming freshman majoring in civil engineering! I have CALSO tomorrow, so I was taking a look at some classes I should take. I have some APs, so I can skip Math 1A, 1B, Chem 1A, and English R1A.

Is this a doable schedule? I don't want to overload:

CIV ENG 92 Rector (1 unit)
ENG 10 Pruitt (3 units) or ENG 7
MATH 53 Auroux (4 units)
PHYSICS 7A Zettl (4 units)
RHETOR R1B Gutterriez (4 units)

I was also wondering which classes I should pick during Phase 1.

Thanks in advance!

Doable schedule. Take Engineering 10 w/ Pruitt because she is good.

Choose Physics 7A so you can sign up for the lab section you want and Rhetoric R1B since they can only allow ~35 people per class.

Welcome to Cal!

Physics 7A is known to be an impacted course; even H7A usually fills up. So choose it in phase 1.

Note that Math 53 and 54 can be taken in either order, or simultaneously, so consider Math 54 or H54 as alternate courses in case your first choice courses are full (H54 rarely fills up).

Other alternate courses to have in your list in case your first choice courses are full:

Engineering 7 (which is more impacted in the spring than the fall, according to the IEOR department)

all other R&C B courses (check the department web sites for instructors and reading lists to see which are more interesting to you)

other humanities and social studies courses

Civil Engineering 60 or 70.

Don’t take E10 unless you think you might go into mechanical engineering or something. It’s no longer a requirement for civil engineers.

E7 is always easier in the spring, when it is taught by civil engineering professors. If you want, you can take it in the fall but keep this in mind.

My first semester at Cal I took CE 60. There were only a handful of freshmen in the class but it was manageable and a great introduction to civil engineering. I would suggest taking physics 7a, math 53, ce 60, and your R1B.

Phase 1 physics for sure and your R1B. No need to phase 1 CE classes, 90% of the time it’s fine to phase 2 them.

Yay! Late reply, but thanks for all your help! I’m taking Physics 7A, Math 53, CE 92 (1 unit civil eng seminar), and possibly R1B. Got everything I needed at CALSO so far.

Go Bears!
