Choosing Classes at Orientation

Hey, I have orientation on the last week (07/07 -07/09) and was wondering how the process for choosing classes goes. It'd be awesome to have some input from those who had already gone through the process.

1) How do you figure out what courses to take, i.e. mold your four year plan? Are you expected to do it ahead of time?

2) Does each orientation hold a certain amount of slots, or should I expect to get into barely any of my classes considering I'm going to the July orientation.

3) Is there time to meet up with your counselor?

Talk with an advisor, what they probably say is take the core requirements first get use to being college student, blah, blah, blah…but it is true. it might not be difficult to get a course, but not at the time you want and will usually conflicts with other course times. But counselors will say this as well, people drop and add all the time, so I wouldn’t be to worried. As far as the four year plan, look to intern, volunteer, etc. if there is anything that will help you decide how you want to educate yourself, then life experience is the best shaper of behavior. It becomes clear after even a little bit of experience what courses you actually want to take.

Most majors have a suggested class schedule mapped out by year. Look at student handbook for your degree and the advisor will most likely steer you that direction

1) Don’t worry about planning your schedule! I was so nervous about not knowing what classes to choose before summer orientation, but my advisor basically planned the whole thing down to the T.
2) This probably isn’t what you want to hear, but you won’t get into any of your classes if you’re taking lower divisions. I was a July orientation-er this year, and I actually got 0 of my classes. However, add/drop is your friend! I ended up getting all of my classes through add/drop, and most of my friends did too. Definitely make back-up schedules during orientation in your free time at night.
3) You are required to meet up with your counselor during orientation, so yes :)
