Choosing classes at orientation

I’m going to orientation next week, and I’m supposed to choose my classes for the fall. I’ve seen apt of people here talkin about how they’ve looked at courses on Testeudo to get an idea of what they want to take next semester.

However, my question is what classes should I be looking at? As an engineering student, I know that a good chunk of my classes are prescribed (Calc 3, Chem for Engineers, ENES, etc.). So, with that in mind, what classes will I have the freedom to choose? I also understand that my AP credits should get me a few exemptions as well (I’ve seen the chart on the website).

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

What discipline in engineering? What classes are u exempt from?

@maryversity I’m in electrical engineering. Right now, assuming I got the proper AP scores, I believe I should be exempt from Calc 1,2, which would put me in Calc 3, Econ (GenEd social science), ENGL101 (Freshman writing requirement), GVPT170 (GenEd social science), HIST200 & HIST201 (GenEd social science) and MAYBE PHY121 & PHY122.

As far as I can tell, I seem to have fulfilled most of my GenEd requirements, which leaves me wondering what classes I should look to take in the fall.

Nicely done on AP’s! Have you seen the 4 year academic plan for EE? http://www.eng.umd.edu/sites/default/files/images/current/forms/4yrplan/2014-2015/enee-yrplan-ge-2014-2015.pdf

So, for the first semester you really only have one “free” slot - the one allotted for ENGL101. I would personally not count the math as a free slot - just move MATH241 up to replace 140…u really don’t want a semester off from math…strike while the iron is hot and you still have your skills from high school.

So what to take in place of English? You can take the oral communications requirement or am I-series or a scholarship in practice. There is one class I would recommend but it only has a few seats left so I won’t post it publicly - I will pm you if that’s ok.

Do you know how to look for those options on testudo?

Thanks for the reply. I did get a 4 year EE/CE plan at accepted students day, and saw that my initial schedule was, for the most part, prescribed (I was going to consider MATH241 a requirements anyways). If you don’t mind I’d like to know the name of the class you didn’t want to mention (you can PM if you prefer).

My son is also in Engineering and has pretty much taken the same subjects as b3jh24. i am wondering about the class you mentioned in the mail. Could you please give the name of the class.

So Maryversity inquiring minds would love to know! Once the Fall, 2015 session is underway, will you share the course you were recommending. It may also be helpful if others could share particular interesting courses that were highly recommended by students. My older son recommended one for my incoming freshman, but like the class you mentioned, it fills up very quickly!
