Hey guys! I cant decide which classes to take! I dont know which road to go down…and I dont really understand how to choose classes. Can you guys help me?

I am a Physiology and Neuroscience Major, going in my first year. I also plan to go down the PreMed path.

Here are some questions I have, I hope you can answer and help me out!

The counselor told me to take Physics if I got a 5 on the AP chem test, and to take a Chem class if I got something else. Dont I have to take Chemistry anyways since I am going Premed? Why do you think she told me to do what she said?

I got a 5 on AP Bio, which gives me credit for three bio classes–how does this help if I have to take them anyways for premed?

how many classes do you think is good for my freshman year?

Which professors do you recommend?

I got a 5 on AP Calc BC–which covers the Math 10 series. Should I go ahead and take the Math 20 series? Is it better to take the 10 or the 20? 20 is harder, but is it worth the extra work if it comes out to be worth the same in the end?

Yes, as a premed, you will have to take chemistry. Most med schools don't don't accept AP credits to satisfy their requirements.

It helps in that you are now better prepared for the competition you will face at UCSD. Also, if you like, you are now eligible to take upper division classes in biology, which is an option that wouldn't be open to one who didn't take and pass the AP Biology exam.

I would say three to four. 12 - 14 units is a good amount to smoothly transition from high school to college. Basically a math, science, and your college writing program.

From the research I've been doing, I would recommend Johnson or Hoeger for chemistry and Eggers for math.

Getting a 5 in AP Cal BC exempts you from taking Math 10ab and 20ab. If you want credit, you can either enroll in 10c or 20c. Math Majors with a BC score of 5 can take the honors calculus sequence:Math 31AH - 31BH - 31CH

I believe most of these topics are covered in other posts. Look through the forum. If you are in Revelle college, check out Revelle College - UCSD.

you know if you go to the department website they give you a recommended schedule for all 4 years of ucsd. compare what you've already completed and what they recommend. scratch out your math 20ab/10ab series, your physics AP exams, etc. go dig!

oh and btw, taking the AP exam and getting a 5 on it does not exempt you from the subject itself. just because you got a 5 on the physics exam doesn' mean that you get to skip all the physics classes at SD. go search on the ucsd website for what a 5 from the AP exam exempts you from
