Choosing classes in the first year

My S is starting Bard Music program this fall. On the tour we heard that signing up for classes can be compared to THE HUNGER GAMES.

Do first year students get help during the L&T program of how to choose their classes? What other advise could you give us? Thank you.

Yes, they do get help during L&T. Is your son in the conservatory or in the college music program? I would recommend that he look now at the classes and think about what he’d like to take - then research the professors of those classes. The best way to get into a class is to meet with or email the professor and give them a good reason why they would want you in the class and why you want to be there. The student needs to make their case. And the student’s advisor, who will be assigned to him when he arrives, will also help. In addition, sometimes the L&T professor can help. My son, in the last four years only once didn’t get into a class he wanted.

I know a lot about the music programs - in both the college and conservatory. I’d be happy to answer any questions. Or pass your questions along to my son…

LOL - it is a lot like the Hunger Games! There are a few classes where students need to line up early in order to get into them - some in photography - but many others where registration is relatively easy. There will definitely be help about this during L&T.

I just dropped my niece off at Bard (with the rest of her posse: her mom, sister, my daughter). The registration process was the most relaxed of any I’ve been through, and I have sent 4 to college already. I did not know that she would be going into the hunger games shortly. It’s quite beautiful in the Hudson Valley this time of year.

Glassharmonica- you should have stayed for The Bard Music Festival!

Btw. I don’t think my son has ever complained about the class registration process. The trick is not to be passive and know why you want to be in a class, and make sure the professor knows, too. It makes for better classes if the students have all actively chosen to be there.

I second the relaxed registration process, the whole Bard campus vibe is like that. My S. is loving L&T. Thank you all for the advice…
